Bike Share Toronto (formerly Bixi Toronto)[1] is a bicycle sharing system located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Created and developed by Montreal-based Bixi in 2011, the system was taken over by the Toronto Parking Authority in 2013 after Bixi acknowledged that it could not pay the $3.9-million loan that it had been given by the City of Toronto. Bixi filed for bankruptcy on January 20, 2014.[2]
The system was rebranded on April 1, 2014, using symbols similar to the 'Green P' logos used by the Toronto Parking Authority to mark the parking lots it manages. The system consists of 800 bicycles and 80 stations within the downtown Toronto area, which is roughly bounded by Dufferin Street, Lake Ontario, the Don River, and Bloor Street. An additional 20 stations are planned to be installed ahead of the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto.[3] [4][5] Further expansions are anticipated to occur as some Toronto City Council members are planning to use development funds to build new stations.[6]
The service is available for use 24 hours a day, year round. Bike Share Toronto is operated by Motivate (formerly Alta bicycle share),[1] which operates bicycle share systems in the United States, Canada, and Australia.[7] A sponsorship deal was announced with TD Canada Trust in December 2014, which will cover all costs.[8]
