Bigg Boss
Bigg Boss is a television reality show broadcast on Colors channel in India. It follows the Big Brother format, which was first developed by Endemol in the Netherlands.
Within a span of 9 years of telecast, Bigg Boss has rolled out 8 Seasons and one spin-off version thus establishing itself as one of the most popular Reality TV Series in India.
The show has, at times, proved to be a great ratings churner with the viewership at a constant high since the appointment of Salman Khan as the main presenter. Season 4, 5 and 7 have each topped the ratings charts for their respective tenures whereas Season 8 and Halla Bol have scored lowest figures for the channel to date.[1]
Concept
Bigg Boss is a reality show based on the original Dutch Big Brother format developed by John de Mol. A number of contestants (known as "housemates") live in a purpose-built house and are isolated from the rest of the world. Each week, housemates nominate two of their peers for eviction, and the housemates who receives the most nominations would face a public vote. Of these, one would eventually leave, having been "evicted" from the House. However, there were exceptions to this process as dictated by Bigg Boss. In the final week, there were three housemates remaining, and the public voted for who they wanted to win. The housemates in the Indian version are primarily celebrities with the exception of one who is a non-celebrity selected via auditions. Housemates are overseen by a mysterious person known as 'Bigg Boss', whose only presence in the house is through his voice.[2]
The house
A Bigg Bosss House is built for every season. The house was earlier located in the tourist place of Lonavla, Pune district of Maharashtra, however the house for the fifth season was located ND Studios in Karjat.[3][4] The house is well-furnished and decorated. It has all kinds of modern amenities, but just one or two bedrooms and four toilet bath rooms. There is a garden, pool, activity area and gym in the House. There is also a Confession Room, where the housemates may be called in by Bigg Boss for any kind of conversation, and for the nomination process.[5]
The House has no TV connection, no telephones, no Internet connection, clocks, pen or paper.[2]
Rules
While all the rules have never been told to the audience, the most prominent ones are clearly seen. The inmates are not permitted to talk in any other language than Hindi. They are not supposed to tamper with any of the electronic equipment or any other thing in the House. They cannot leave the House premises at any time except when permitted to. They cannot discuss the nomination process with anyone.[6] They cannot sleep in day time.
Sometimes, the housemates may be nominated for other reasons, such as nomination by a person who has achieved special privileges (via tasks or other things), for breaking rules or something else. If something is very serious, a contestant may be evicted directly.[7]
Publication
The main television coverage takes the form of a daily highlights programme and the weekly eviction show on Fridays that are aired on Colors TV, while the first season was aired on Sony TV.[8] Everyday's episodes contain the main happenings of the previous day. Every Saturday episode mainly focuses on an interview of the evicted contestant by the host. The episode on Sunday, named differently across seasons, contains extra footage of the week, which was not included in any episode.

Controversies
Production manipulation, Interference and Partiality
Unlike the international versions of Big Brother, in Bigg Boss, the hosts are seen to be intimidating contestants on the show for their conduct and are often witnessed interfering in almost everything exhibiting a partial stance towards few. Furthermore incidents which breach the contract clause which say that no interaction or hearsay from the outside world would be planted into the house have also been often witnessed.
Season 3
- In the third season, housemate Vindu Dara Singh was often credited as Akshay Kumar's favourite housemate after playing Kumar’s sidekick in "Kambakkht Ishq"[25] and becoming good friends with him. With being hated by fellow inmates inside the house for his conduct accompanied by the resentment against him from the audiences Vindu survived seven evictions after consecutively getting nominated from eighth week onwards. Vindu went on to win the season and was also announced the most stylish and bold contestant consequently winning a Chevrolet Cruze and Rs. 10 million.
Season 4
- During the fourth season, TV actress Sara Khan, openly objected to the Bigg Boss' behaviour towards fellow-housemate Dolly Bindra. Ever since Dolly Bindra re-entered the house, there had been quite a bit of a change in her stance and attitude towards the inmates of the house. Dolly became quite polite and got some benefits like she was made the queen immediately after she re-entered, thereby enabling her to get certain benefits that the others couldn't even dream of. Thus, with almost everyone quite flabbergasted, Sara protested against partiality towards Dolly. Sara kept on complaining that 'Bigg Boss' was not fair at which Samir Soni, who too, had re-entered agreed with what Sara had to say. Sara was later strictly warned by the Bigg Boss and host Salman Khan regarding these vague accusations.[26]
Season 5
- On the Opening of the season five Salman and Sanjay ridiculed Shakti Kapoor after he entered the house saying, "Bigg Boss ko maanna padega! Shakti Kapoor jaise logon ko apne ghar bulaya, hum toh kabhi na bulayen! (It is quite surprising that Shakti Kapoor got the invitation to enter the Bigg Boss' house, I wouldn’t have invited him, ever.)".[27] Shakti was hurt by these remarks and demanded an apology from Salman, however, was never reached by either Khan or Dutt.[28]
Season 6
- Soon after the entry of Kashif Qureshi, a common man chosen via auditions held across India, as an inmate of the house the whole exercise of selecting an unknown person to be part of Bigg Boss seemed to have come into question and has been reportedly a planned one. After Kashif was selected from the three short-listed hopefuls to enter the house the media scrutinized every detail that linked to Kashif's background. Unexpectedly Qureshi was found to personally know Salman Khan since he was shooting Wanted.[29]
Season 8
- The introduction of special panel members on occasional eviction episodes came under controversy during the season. The production team was mainly accused for violating the concept of the original Big Brother franchise and allowing interference from external agents into the house environment. The second week saw appearances from Andy and Kamya who were seen forcing their opinions on the housemates by calling it a guide to their stay. However Kamya, on a relative off-note, went on to malign targeted housemates' stance and reputation by wording her take as the 'viewer's point of view'.[30] Subsequent to the episode's airing critics termed her conduct as 'adding script to a rather spontaneous programme'. A similar incident took place in the fourth week where Sargun Mehta's argument with Minissha received much backlash from viewers.[31][32][33] Despite demands and complaints from viewers, the broadcaster declined the opportunity to explain the addition.[34] Furthermore Salman Khan was also criticized for siding with Sonali Raut without a hint of care for housemates' or viewers' opinion and judgement citing the live feed as enough proof for evaluation. However viewers expressed disapprobation since the live feed being released on the channel's website was only broadcasting previously recorded content.[35]
Bullying and Violence
Season 8
- On Day 8, during the weekly task, Gautam Gulati directed an outburst of rage and abuse at Karishma Tanna who during the time was applying chilli powder on his body in order to force him out of the seat. Rebuffing the concept of the purpose of the task Gulati threw a fit set to threaten Tanna.[36] On retaliation Tanna appealed immediate disqualification of Gulati alongside support from other housemates however producers refrained from intervention. The task was consequently abandoned by both teams.[37][38] Viacom allegedly upheld 2550 complaints from viewers, saying that the footage was "distressing to watch" and "exceeded the viewers' expectations".[39][40] The censorship board in India claimed to edit the part out from repeat transmissions.[41][42]
- On Day 45, after a record of previous five warnings regarding use of deliberate force towards fellow housemates, Puneet Issar assaulted Arya Babbar to the extent that his neck muscles cramped and his vocal ability strained.[43][44] Due to apparent protests from housemates Bigg Boss decided to remove Puneet from the house as a result of his violent behaviour. Two days later Puneet returned to the house but was caged in the garden. The decision to bring back an ejected housemate created an uproar amongst the viewers. Where the viewers vehemently expressed disapproval for this action on social media, Endemol and Viacom received a record of 5700 complaints from all over India contesting barring the show from mainstream network.[45][46] Housemates from previous seasons were seen encouraging followers to avoid watching the season which later, on proving successful, resulted in loss of a major section of TRPs for the show.[47]
Guests
The Bigg Boss house has witnessed temporary stays of illustrious celebrities and even some ex-contestants during some seasons. Ajaz Khan & Upen Patel are the only two ex-contestants who returned in a season other than the season they participated in, as guests who stayed in the house with the contestants.
