Big Jet Plane is a track by Angus Stone operating under the name Lady of the Sunshine from the album Smoking Gun.

"Big Jet Plane" was named Australian Recording Industry Association's Single of the Year for 2010 at the ARIA Music Awards of 2010, while Down the Way was named Album of the Year. The song featured on both Nova 100 and Triple J radio playlists and after winning Single of the Year was added to the playlists of stations such as Fox FM in Melbourne. On 26 January 2011, the song was voted number 1 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010.

The song has received a gold accreditation, having sold over 35,000 copies in Australia. It has also been used in various films and television commercials.

Background

"Big Jet Plane" was later re-recorded by Angus & Julia Stone and released by the duo in 2010 as an EP. The EP includes four tracks, three of which can be found on other Angus & Julia Stone albums (see below).[1]

The title track also features on the 2010 album Down the Way, released by the Nettwerk Music Group (Vancouver). The song is a modified version of a song released by Angus Stone as part of solo project Lady of the Sunshine, and featured on the 2009 album Smoking Gun.[2][3][4]

Chart performance

The week following the ARIA Music Awards of 2010, the song made a massive leap from #47 to #21 on the ARIA Chart, giving the song its peak position in its 22nd week of release. In total the song has spent 33 weeks in Australia's ARIA Charts. After the song was voted number 1 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2010, the song reached #6 on Australia's iTunes songs chart, and re-entered the ARIA Charts at #32.

Cover versions

Papa vs Pretty covered the song at the 2011 Apra Music Awards.[5] Goodwill and Hook N Sling remixed the song and renamed it "Take You Higher".

Appearances in media

The song can be heard in TV series such as 90210,[9] One Tree Hill,[10] and Parenthood.[11] It also appears on the soundtrack of French film Romantics Anonymous. A music video featuring scenes from the film was released on 9 November 2010.[12]

The duo performed the song on French television show Taratata on 19 May 2010.[13]

The album cover photography features a Trans Australian Airlines Convair CV-240 piston-powered airplane, as established from the identification characters "VH-TAP" located on the empennage's vertical stabilizer; this aircraft is itself not a jet plane.
