Season 5 (2010)

Big Brother Africa 5 (also known as Big Brother Africa: All-Stars) was the fifth season of the Big Brother Africa reality television series produced by Endemol. The season premiered on Sunday, July 18, 2010 and was broadcast by M-Net and M-NetAfrica for 91 days, concluding on October 17, 2010. Ikponmwosa "IK" Osakioduwa came back to host the show for the second time in a row.

Format

There were fourteen housemates from previous seasons who returned as contestants for an All-Stars season. The housemates were competing for US$200,000. However, following the riot the housemates had on Day 6, Big Brother decided to deduct the prize money to US$180,000. If the housemates wanted the full prize back, they had to maintain a responsible behaviour. Eventually, Big Brother decided to return the prize money to the original US$200,000. This year, fourteen countries participated in the season. Each country had one representative for them. All fourteen countries were returning countries and these countries were Angola, Botswana, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

On Day 1, fourteen housemates from the previous four seasons entered the House on launch night.

Twists

This year, a number of twists occurred.

Secrets

This year, each housemate held a secret that was worth US$1,000. If a housemate maintained their secret for the whole of their stay, that housemate will keep the $1,000. If a housemate revealed their secret, that housemate will lose the $1,000. If a housemate's secret was discovered by another housemate, that housemate will lose the $1,000 and it will go to the housemate who discovered it.

Meryl She is dating a Namibian celebrity.
Munya He kissed another man while filming a movie.
Mwisho He is dating two women at the same time.
Paloma She peed in her pants after trying weed.
Sammi He had a love child who died.
Sheila She has a phobia of short people.
Tatiana She can sing well, but nobody has heard her sing.
Uti He was a Britney Spears fan.
Yacob He has never been in love.

The Barn

Another twist has been added known as The Barn. The barn was another house that was opened by Big Brother on Day 7. He said that the evicted housemates will go there from Day 14. The Barn was a temporary place for the evicted housemates to stay because there was a chance for them to return to the main house. While some barnmates would go back to the main house others were to be evicted permanently. It was officially closed on Day 77.

Dagger

This season, another twist known as the Dagger took place since Day 7. The Dagger was a punishment that was given to housemate(s) for a week until the live eviction show. The daggers were given to them by the evicted housemates. The Dagger is similar to the "Molotov Cocktail" in season 4.

Week 8

On Day 50, nominations occurred.
On the same day, Yacob walked out of the barn due to being uncomfortable with the environment.

The initial nominees were Meryl and Mwisho.
Head of House, Meryl decided to save herself and replace herself with Paloma.
Therefore, Mwisho and Paloma were up for eviction for the week.

This week, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to save and these were the results:

On Day 56, Paloma was evicted from the house and sent to the barn.

Week 9

On Day 57, nominations occurred.

The initial nominees were Jennifer and Uti.
Head of House, Uti decided to save himself and replace himself with Munya.
Therefore, Jennifer and Munya were up for eviction for the week.

On Day 61, Hannington and Lerato had a heated argument. Big Brother ejected Hannington for physically assaulting Lerato. As for Lerato, she was banned from nominating others for the rest of her stay in the competition.

On Day 63, Jennifer was evicted from the house and sent to the barn.

Week 10

On Day 64, nominations occurred.

The initial nominees were Kaone, Munya, Mwisho and Uti.
Head of House, Munya decided to save himself and replace himself with Meryl.
Therefore, Kaone, Meryl, Mwisho and Uti were up for eviction for the week.

This week, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to save and these were the results:

On Day 70, Meryl was evicted from the house and sent to the barn.

Week 11

On Day 71, nominations occurred.

The initial nominees were Kaone, Mwisho and Uti.
However, Big Brother nullified the nominations and put up all barnmates for eviction.
Therefore, Code, Jennifer, Lerato, Meryl, Paloma, Sheila and Tatiana were up for eviction for the week.

This week, viewers voted for the barnmate they wanted to return to the main house and these were the results:

*The tie-breaker rule applied to Paloma and Tatiana where the number of votes for the housemate were divided by the 15 regions to get the average percentage. Paloma had the lowest average percentage.
**Lerato wasn't originally returning to the main house but she was chosen by the other housemates to return after playing a game of luck.

On Day 77, Sheila, Tatiana and Lerato returned to the main house while Code, Jennifer, Meryl and Paloma were permanently evicted.

Week 12

On Day 78, nominations occurred.

The initial nominees were Kaone, Munya, Mwisho and Uti.
Head of House, Mwisho decided to save himself and replace himself with Tatiana.
Therefore, Kaone, Munya, Tatiana and Uti were up for eviction for the week.

This week, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to save and these were the results:

On Day 84, Kaone and Tatiana were evicted.

Week 13

Lerato, Munya, Mwisho, Sheila and Uti were the finalists of the season. The final five were competing for the grand prize of US$200,000.

This week, viewers voted for the housemate they wanted to win and these were the results:

Uti won 2010's All-Stars season after getting the most votes with 8 country votes.

Aftermath

Although Munya lost, a consortium of business people from Zimbabwe gave [1] Munya US$300 000 as they felt he deserved to win the price money and the voting system was flawed. Following within these events, Multichoice also arranged a consolation price for him.
