Bhattacharjee, Bhattacharya, and Bhattacharyya, all pronounced Bhôṭṭacharjo in Bengali and Bhôttasairjyô in Assamese) are three common spellings of a prominent Assamese and Bengali Kulin Brahmin surname.

Etymology

Bhattacharjee was a noble surname or upadhi conferred upon those Bengali Brahmins who were involved in sacred rituals in pre-medieval and medieval ages. Although, now Bhattacharjees are found almost in every quarter of the society. It is an aristocratic title. Bhattacharyya Brahmins were patronized in the courts of Ahom kings of Assam and were honored and respected. The surname is a combination of two words Bhatt or Bhatta "Vedic priest (authorized to perform sacred rituals)" and Achārya "teacher". Bhatta is itself a surname common in most parts of India.
