Bhairab Ganguly College is a college in Belgharia, a northern district of Kolkata, West Bengal, India, that was set up on 3 September 1968. It is currently affiliated with the West Bengal State University.[1] It was formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta.
Bhairab Ganguly College is co-educational and offers three-year degree courses in all three main streams of Humanities, Science, and Commerce. Since 1997-98, vocational courses in Advertising, Sales Promotion and Sales Management, sponsored by University Grants Commission (UGC), have been introduced at the degree level.
History
Sometime in 1955, Sri Jibandhan Ganguly, a renowned social worker and educationist from Belgharia, donated about 11 bighas of land to the West Bengal Government for the setting up of a degree college in Belgharia for the teaching of arts, science, and commerce. The primary objective was to provide higher education opportunities for boys and, more particularly, for girls in the industrial area of Belgharia since it was inconvenient to continue higher education in Kolkata. The college came into being on 3 September 1968.
The Government subsequently merged the Arts Section of the Vivekananda Centenary College with the newly established Bhairab Ganguly College, and this came as a booster to the new institution as a good number of experienced teachers joined the college.
In 1969 it opened an Evening Commerce Section to meet the demand for Commerce education. However, this was subsequently merged with the day session in 1980.
Eminent faculty
Many eminent scholars have enriched the faculty of the college. Most mention worthy among them are Mr. Amit Kushari in Physics (joined the Indian Administrative Service later on), Dr. Debasis Mukherjee in Chemistry (He later on became the Director of the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science and received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award in Chemical Science), Dr. Ratan Lal Basu in Economics (retired in December 2008), Dr. Manab Kumar Hazra in Zoology and Mr. Manabes Majumdar (also the Coordinator of the IGNOU unit of the college) in Economics.
New subjects
In recent years honours in many new subjects like Computer Science, Electronics, Journalism, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Urdu, Bengali, Philosophy and Physiology have been introduced. Dr. Biswanath Ghosh, Principal till 31.1.2008, played the pioneering role in this regard. He also constructed the new building, library room and auditorium ‘Alapan’. After his retirement the Teacher in-Charge, Dr. Ratan Lal Basu took initiative in introducing Masters Degree courses in Commerce and English. He also took initiative in updating Asset Registration & streamlining Admission Process (so far anarchic) strictly according to merit to do justice to the applicants.In this regard it is also mentionable that the college is successfully running a Major[previously known as vocational course] course "Advertising,Sales Promotion and Sales Management" since 1997.
NAAC inspection
The NAAC inspection of the college was completed during March, 2008 and the leading role in making it successful was taken by the Teacher-in-Charge Dr.Ratan Lal Basu, Dr. Asok Misra (the Coordinator of the NAAC Steering Committee), Dr. Manab Kumar Hazra and Mr. Manabes Majumdar and among the non-teaching staff, Mr. Satyabrata Narayan Chatterjee. The college was accredited B* by the NAAC.
