Bhagwan Ramji

Bhagwan Ramji, popularly known as Sarkar Baba, Aghoreshwar Bhagwan Ram and Awadhoot Bhagwan Ram,was a great saint of the Aghori tradition as well as a social reformer.

Life

He was born in Gundi village in Bhojpur district in the Indian state of Bihar on 12 September, 1937 and died on 29 November, 1992.

Awadhoot Bhagwan Ram worked at humanitarian goals to benefit the poor and downtrodden people in India. He also fought against the dowry system, implementing a simplified wedding ceremony. He also helped work towards getting social welfare programs, including education for the poor.

He lost his father at a young age. Although his grandmother got him admitted to the village school, he never had any interest in studies. Over time he developed disinterest towards his mundane life and chose to lead a reclusive life in a hut constructed amidst a guava grove, away from any human habitation. Eventually he decided to wander the countryside. He loitered from one place to another until he finally reached Varanasi where he sought shelter in Baba Keenaram Sthal Kreem-Kund.

While there he was introduced to the Keenarami Aughar tradition of sainthood by Baba Rajeshwar Ram Ji, but he did not remain there for long period. He left the ashram and wandered along river banks. In the course of practicing intense Sadhana he became extremely lean and thin and thereafter attained God realization. Gradually, his name and fame spread and wherever he stayed for the purpose of Sadhana, people flocked to him in large numbers seeking blessings. Baba Rajeshwar Ram Ji called on him to return to the ashram, and although he obeyed his Guru, he left the ashram since he felt he had to play a greater role in society not only as a saint, but also as a servant of the afflicted and neglected people of the world.

He opened a hospital for lepers in Varanasi under the banner of Sri Sarveshwari Samooh.

Death

His death occurred during his final practice of samadhi, mahasamādhi, on 29 November, 1992 in Manhattan, USA.

For the first time in the history of Aghori tradition, his body was consigned to fire as per Hindu rituals by his disciple
