Bewar (pronounced Hindi:बेवर, Urdu:بیور) is a town and a nagar panchayat in Mainpuri district in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India.Bewar is block headquarter consits of 76 gram panchayats.It is connected by Two national highways I.e. NH 91 & NH 92.
Geography
Bewar is located at 25°45′N 79°56′E / 25.75°N 79.93°E280 km from Delhi.[1] It has an average elevation of 127 metres (416 feet) 280 km from Delhi. It is surrounded by Lower Ganges Canal from three sides and by the river Kaali from one side.the five major cities are located at equal distance about 150 km (Agra,Kanpur,Aligarh,Bareilly,Gwalior)from Bewar. Bewar is connected with two national highways NH 91 and NH92.It has a bus terminal (government owned) which act as a major terminal for nearby towns and villages.
Historical View
As of 2001 India census,[2] Bewar had a population of 21,058. Males constituted 53% of the population and females 47%. Bewar has an average literacy rate of 66%, surpassing the national average of 59.5%; with 57% of the males and 43% of females literate. 16% of the population is under six years of age.
It is believed that the city of Bewar was established by Vidur of the Mahabharata. This small town has contributed greatly during fight for independence of India. The name Bewar originated during the Mutiny of 1857, the English placed warning banners on all the entrances of the town saying "BEWARE". Gradually, with time, the letter "E" was omitted and the town got renowned by the name "BEWAR". It has been home of many freedom fighters, who sacrificed their life for freedom.
Every year, a 16 days special exhibition, Shaheed Mela takes place in remembrance of the freedom fighters who sacrificed their life for the freedom of bewar. The exhibition was founded by Shri Jagdish Narayan Tripathi who contributed greatly in the development of this town. He also founded Shaheed Smarak and Shaheed mandir at the place where three freedom fighters of Bewar; Shaheed Krishna Kumar (age 14 yrs.), Shaheed Jamuna Prasad Tripathi(age 40 yrs.) and 'Shaheed Sita Ram Gupta(age 42yrs.), lost their lives while fighting the British on dt.15th august1942.
Shaheed Smarak and Shaheed mandir is a symbol of freedom and Mandir contains 26 statues of statewide freedom fighters who lost their lives for our country.
