Alberto Alves Coelho (born 21 July 1993), commonly known as Betinho, is a Portuguese footballer who plays for Brentford as a striker, on loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal. He is a current Portugal U21 international.

Club career

Sporting Clube de Portugal

Born in Santa Maria de Lamas, Aveiro District, Betinho began his career as a youth at União de Lamas. He signed for Primeira Liga side Sporting Clube de Portugal in 2004, at the age of 11. Betinho progressed through the youth ranks and received his maiden call into a first team squad on 14 December 2011, for a UEFA Europa League group stage game away against Lazio. Included in a youthful squad along with graduates Ricardo Esgaio, Tiago Ilori, João Carlos and João Mário, Betinho remained an unused substitute in the 2–0 loss.[1] It proved to be his only first team call of the 2011–12 season.[2] Betinho received his first call up of the 2012–13 season for a league match versus G.D. Estoril Praia on 29 September 2012.[3] He made his first team debut on 73 minutes, coming on as a substitute for André Carrillo. He was a regular inclusion on the substitutes' bench in October and November 2012, appearing in three matches and making a total of four appearances during the 2012–13 season.[4] He was a part of the Sporting U19 side which finished third in the 2012–13 NextGen Series.[5] Betinho failed to receive a first team call during the 2013–14 season and departed on loan for the entirety of the 2014–15 season.[5][6]

Sporting B

Betinho made his reserve team debut early in the 2012–13 season, as a late substitute in a 1–0 Segunda Liga victory over Vitória B.[7] He scored his first goal for the Bs on 22 August, in a 2–1 home win over S.C. Covilhã.[8] He made 32 appearances and scored seven goals during the 2012–13 season.[6] Despite playing less games, he showed improved form during the 2013–14 season, scoring nine goals in 17 appearances.[6]

Vitória (loan)

In January 2014, Betinho joined Primeira Liga side Vitória on loan until the end of the 2013–14 season.[9] He made just eight appearances and failed to score.[10]

Brentford (loan)

On 1 September 2014, Betinho joined English Championship side Brentford on a season-long loan, to cover for the injured Scott Hogan.[5][11] Bees manager Mark Warburton had previously been impressed Betinho's performances for Sporting Lisbon in the NextGen Series, a competition he helped organise.[5] He was awarded the number 22 shirt, recently vacated by Jake Reeves.[12] After the signing, Warburton described Betinho as "quick, strong and technically gifted".[5] International clearance problems meant that he was not included in a squad until the league match versus Norwich City on 16 September.[12][13] He made his debut in the 3–0 defeat, replacing Stuart Dallas after 77 minutes.[12] Lacking fitness, Betinho made his first appearance for the club's Development Squad in a match versus Sheffield Wednesday on 22 September and converted Montell Moore's cross to ensure the game finished 1–1.[14] After remaining on the bench through most first team games in late September, October and then being left out of the squad entirely,[15] Warburton explained in early November that Betinho was working to adapt to the English game.[16] In mid-April 2015 and with Andre Gray as the only fit forward option,[17] Warburton still neglected to call Betinho into the squad,[15] despite reporting that he had been training well.[18]

International career

Betinho has represented Portugal from U15 to U21 level. He had a prolific goalscoring spell with the U19 side, scoring 14 goals in 20 games and topping the 2012 European U19 Championship qualifying goalscoring chart, with 10 strikes.[19] He scored twice in the tournament finals,[6] in which Portugal went out in the group stage. Betinho was named in the U21 squad for the 2013 Toulon Tournament and despite failing to score in three appearances, he helped the team to a fourth-place finish.
