Bernardo Mota Veiga de Carvalho e Silva (born 10 August 1994), known as Bernardo Silva, is a Portuguese professional footballer who plays for Monégasque club Monaco as a midfielder.
Club career
Benfica
Bernardo Silva played for Benfica youth ranks and in 2013 won the 2012–13 Portuguese Juniors Championship.[1] He made his professional debut in the first match of the 2013-14 season, against Trofense.[2]
On 19 October 2013, Bernardo made his debut for Benfica at the age of 19, in a Taça de Portugal 1–0 victory against lower league Cinfães, coming out of the bench in the 80th minute.[3] His performances in his debut season earn him the Segunda Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year.[4]
Monaco
On 7 August 2014, Bernardo joined Monaco on one-year loan deal.[5] He made his Monaco debut on 17 August, substituting Lucas Ocampos in the second half.[6] On 21 September 2014, he made his debut as a starter for Monaco, in a win against Guingamp.[7] On 14 December 2014, Bernardo scored the victorious goal against Marseille in Ligue 1.[8]
On 20 January 2015, Benfica announced that Bernardo Silva's economic and sports rights had been sold to Monaco for €15.75 million.[9] He signed for the new club until 30 June 2019.[10]
International career
In 2013, he represented Portugal at the 2013 UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship,[11] reaching the semi-finals. For his performances, Silva was named among the top 10 talents under the age of 19 in Europe by a selection of UEFA reporters.[12][13][14]
On 31 March 2015 he made his senior debut for Portugal, starting in a 0–2 friendly defeat to Cape Verde in Estoril.[15]
