Berea is a census-designated place (CDP) in Greenville County, South Carolina, United States. The population was 14,158 at the 2000 census. It is part of the GreenvilleMauldinEasley Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

Berea is located at 34°52′44″N 82°27′39″W / 34.87889°N 82.46083°W (34.878845, -82.460751).[3]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 7.8 square miles (20 km2), of which 7.6 square miles (20 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2) (3.06%) is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 14,158 people, 5,630 households, and 3,822 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,861.6 people per square mile (718.3/km²). There were 5,994 housing units at an average density of 788.1 per square mile (304.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 75.70% White, 15.94% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.46% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 4.92% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.43% of the population. 2% of the Hispanic population are from Colombian ancestry.

There were 5,630 households out of which 30.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 14.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.1% were non-families. 26.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 2.94.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $32,670, and the median income for a family was $38,723. Males had a median income of $29,137 versus $21,849 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $16,512. About 12.8% of families and 16.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.8% of those under age 18 and 6.6% of those age 65 or over.
