Ben O'Brien (born November 4, 1984) is an American comedian and filmmaker based out of Baltimore, Maryland. He is a member of the Wham City arts collective and founding member of Wham City Comedy.[1] He performs live as well as creating short films, including for Adult Swim and Merge Records. He is the co-creator of the web series Showbeast (2006–present) and he manages and performs in the Wham City Comedy Tour (2010–present). The website Brightest Young Things posted this about the Wham City Comedy Tour "...you should make a point to see them, as they’re super funny and doing DIY comedy like few others."[2]
Most prominently he co-directed and co-produced Live Forever as You Are Now with Alan Resnick. It aired on Adult Swim the week of Dec 23rd at 4am.[3]
Life and Education
Ben was born and raised in Oswego, New York and went on to attend college at SUNY Purchase. In 2008 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he maintains a studio at the Copycat Building and, along with friends from SUNY Purchase, joined Wham City, an arts and music collective.[4]
Live Performance
Ben performs live, doing standup comedy and multimedia performances, often with Wham City Comedy.[5] He has collaborated for live events with comedians such as Reggie Watts, Stavros Halkias, Aparna Nancheria and Ezra Winter.[6] as well as the multimedia comedy of Everything is Terrible! and writers for The Onion Daniel Kibblesmith and Sam Weiner.
Video Work
His notable projects include a music video for the band Wye Oak for the song "The Tower,"[7] the short films for Adult Swim, and his self-produced web series "Showbeast" which included collaboration with electronic musician Dan Deacon[8] with whom he also directed a music video for the Deacon song "True Thrush."[9]
