Bellavary (Irish: Béal Átha Bhearaigh)[1] is a village in County Mayo, Ireland. It is situated on the N5 between Swinford and Castlebar (11 kilometres (7 mi) north-east of the latter), close to Foxford and the River Moy. The 2006 census showed that Ballyvary had a population of 147. It stands on crossing of River May, railway and the N5.

Transport

Bellavary railway station opened on 19 June 1894, but finally closed on 17 June 1963.[2]

Famous people

The parents of Academy Award nominee Imelda Staunton, are natives of Bellavary and near-by village Bohola. Staunton is famous for roles in Vera Drake (2004), Nanny McPhee (2005) and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007).

Soccer

Bellavary's soccer team, the Bellavary Blue Bombers, were founded in McKeown's Field Knocksaxon. The Bombers originally were friends from the Aughaluskey, Knocksaxon, Shraheens, Ara, Coolfox, Derrinogue, Tavanaghkeneffe & Loughkeerane who got together for town leagues. They entered the old Division 3 in the Mayo League in 1986. Today the Bombers offers soccer at under 10, 12, 14 and 16 boys/girls as well as boys under 16, 18 & junior football.
