Bed size
Bed size refers to the dimensions of a mattress and the names by which standard sizes are called. Beds themselves vary widely in size according to the size of the frame and degree of ornamentation but are sold according to the size of mattress they take. The dimensions and names vary considerably around the world, with most countries having their own standards and terminology. In addition, two mattresses with the same nominal size may still vary slightly in actual dimensions, due to manufacturing tolerances, level of padding, and support type.

Canada and United States
Modern manufacturing conventions have resulted in a significant number of standard sizes of commercial bedding for mattresses and box springs. Imported beds vary by country of origin as per the table above.
These dimensions are for the mattress—the actual bed frame will be a little larger in order to fully encompass and support the mattress. The thickness of the mattress may vary considerably.
Standard North American sizes
The standard bed sizes are:
- Twin
- 39 in × 75 in (99 cm × 191 cm)[8]
- A "single" may be the same size, or a few inches narrower.
- Three-quarters
- 48 in × 75 in (122 cm × 191 cm)
- Full or double
- 54 in × 75 in (137 cm × 191 cm)[8]
- Queen
- 60 in × 80 in (152 cm × 203 cm)[8]
- King
- 76 in × 80 in (193 cm × 203 cm)[8]
- A king-sized bed may have a king-sized box spring (foundation), or, more commonly, two smaller box-springs (each the size of a Twin XL bed) under a king-sized mattress.
- California king
- 72 in × 84 in (183 cm × 213 cm)[8]
- Texas King
- 80 in × 98 in (203 cm × 249 cm)[8]
Other North American sizes
In addition to the sizes described above, other sizes have found some acceptance in North America, including:
- Twin XL
- 39 in × 80 in (99 cm × 203 cm)[9]
- Full XL
- 54 in × 80 in (137 cm × 203 cm)[9]
- California Queen Waterbed Insert
- Used for conventional mattresses inside a waterbed frame. Subtract 2.0 inches from California Queen waterbed size.
- 58 in × 82 in (147 cm × 208 cm)[10]
- California King Waterbed Insert
- Used for conventional mattresses inside a waterbed frame. Subtract 2.0 inches from California King waterbed size.
- 70 in × 82 in (178 cm × 208 cm)[10]
Europe: UK and Ireland sizes
Most modern beds/mattresses sold in the UK and Ireland are constructed using metric dimensions.
UK standard bed sizes are:
- Standard single
- 90 cm × 190 cm (35 in × 75 in)[11]
- Small-single
- 90 cm × 200 cm (35 in × 79 in)[11]
- Common size for hospitality (zip & link) twin beds as beds can be combined to make a superking bed.
- European single
- 75 cm × 190 cm (30 in × 75 in)
- Small-double
- 120 cm × 190 cm (47 in × 75 in)[11]
- Standard Double
- 135 cm × 190 cm (53 in × 75 in)[11]
- King
- 150 cm × 200 cm (59 in × 79 in)[11]
- Extra-king
- 180 cm × 190 cm (71 in × 75 in)
- Hospitality size formed by zip & linking two standard single beds together.
- Superking/Queen
- 180 cm × 200 cm (71 in × 79 in)[11]
- Also known as "European King".
- Eastern King
- 200 cm × 200 cm (79 in × 79 in)
- Emperor
- 215 cm × 215 cm (85 in × 85 in)
- Caesar
- 245 cm × 220 cm (96 in × 87 in)
It is worth noting that 'bed size' in the UK generally refers to mattress size. This is because mattresses have a standard size grading, whereas bed frames do not. While many companies in the UK do offer bespoke bed making services, most mass produced bed linens, bed frames and mattresses fit only the standard bed sizes above.[11] A common mistake is to use a mattress size as the required space for the full dimensions of the bed and mattress.
Large retailer IKEA also sells European size mattresses in the UK.[12]
