Beauty & the Beast is an American television series, very loosely inspired by the 1987 CBS series of the same name, created by Sherri Cooper-Landsman and Jennifer Levin that premiered October 11, 2012 on The CW.[1] Kristin Kreuk and Jay Ryan star in the title roles alongside Austin Basis, Nina Lisandrello and Nicole Gale Anderson.
On February 13, 2015, the series was renewed for a fourth season, ahead of the season three premiere.[2]
Plot
Catherine Chandler witnesses her mother being shot the same night she is saved from her mother's murderers by a supposed beast. Nine years later, now working as a detective for the NYPD, a case leads her to discover that Vincent Keller, an ex-soldier believed to have been killed in action during military service, is actually alive. As Catherine gets to know him, she starts finding out more about her mother's murder and about who (and what) Vincent really is. At the same time, they get to know one another and eventually fall in love.

Main cast
- Kristin Kreuk as Catherine 'Cat' Chandler: A homicide detective with the NYPD. Nine years before the pilot, she was nearly killed by the men who murdered her mother, but saved by a mysterious beast. In the pilot, she finds out the "beast" is actually Vincent, and keeps his secret to protect him from Muirfield. The two fall in love in Season 1, with Catherine covering his tracks for him. In Season 2, after Vincent is kidnapped and brainwashed into not remembering Catherine, she helps him get his memory back. However, when he chooses to be more prone to violence and being a beast, Catherine breaks up with him and starts a relationship with Gabe. They break up after Vincent decides to regain Catherine's trust by changing for better, and she & Vincent reunite.
- Jay Ryan as Vincent Keller: A soldier who enlisted in Afghanistan, and was part of an experiment called Operation Muirfield that turned them into super soldiers. Vincent's DNA was mutated and he developed the ability to transform into a creature very human-like in appearance but with a beastly mind; he turns into the creature whenever he is distressed. When the army shut down Muirfield because the subjects were out of control, Vincent survived and went into hiding in New York. In Season 1, he starts to come out of hiding when he falls in love with Catherine, the woman he saved nine years ago and who he has been following ever since. When he's kidnapped and brainwashed in Season 2, he acts more beast-like than human and becomes distant from Catherine, dating Tori Windsor and being sent on mysterious missions to exterminate other Beasts by a mysterious foe. When he starts to become more human after Tori dies, he & Catherine reunite.
- Austin Basis as J.T. Forbes: Vincent's childhood friend and a professor at a university in New York. He hid Vincent from the men who have been hunting him for a decade out of guilt, as he felt responsible for what happened to Vincent since J.T. was the one that had signed him up for the Muirfield program under the assumption he would be protecting Vincent from the more dangerous warzones by doing so. After having a drunken fling with her in season two, he develops strong feelings for Cat's police partner, Tess, and the two start to date.
- Nina Lisandrello as Tess Vargas: Catherine's partner and closest friend who eventually discovers and reluctantly agrees to keep Vincent's secret, though eventually she learns to trust and form a friendship with Vincent, if only for Cat's sake. She had an affair with her boss, Joe Bishop, but later begins a relationship with J.T following his departure from her precinct.
- Nicole Gale Anderson as Heather Chandler (recurring, seasons 1-2; regular, season 3):[3] Catherine's younger sister and former roommate, who moves to Miami to further her career, but later returns to New York engaged to be married. When she first met Vincent she immediately hated him, but near the end of Season 2 Catherine admits, with Vincent's blessing, their secret. At first Heather is angered and horrified by her sister's lover, however she has a change of heart when Vincent willingly risks his life to save hers.
- Sendhil Ramamurthy as Gabriel 'Gabe' Lowen (seasons 1-2): A former assistant district attorney who came to Catherine's precinct to hunt down Vincent. He was eventually revealed to be a Muirfield experiment, as well, trying to become human. He tries to kill Vincent to save himself, but becomes human when Catherine revives him after he is supposedly shot dead. In Season 2, he tries to make amends because he is falling for Catherine. Catherine starts dating Gabe after she & Vincent break up. When Catherine leaves Gabe to be with Vincent again, Gabe becomes obsessed with getting her back, eventually changing back into a beast to get Vincent away from Catherine. He is killed by Catherine in self-defense.[4][5]
- Brian White as Joe Bishop (season 1): Catherine and Tess's former commanding officer. He cheated on his wife with Tess. His vendetta against his brother's killer (Vincent, by accident) distracted him from his job and he was fired by the start of season two.
- Max Brown as Dr. Evan Marks (season 1): Police morgue medical examiner who worked with Catherine and had a flirtatious relationship with her. Evan worked with Muirfield to capture Vincent out of a mixture of fear and jealousy for Catherine; when he realized Muirfield had tricked him, he helped Vincent & Catherine escape, but was killed by Muirfield agents.
- Amber Skye Noyes as Tori Windsor (season 2):[6] A beast who was actually the daughter of a Muirfield experiment. After Vincent killed her father, she found out she possessed beast abilities, and became attached to Vincent because of this. She tried to form a deeper wedge in the feuding between, and separated Vincent and Cat because of this attraction; Vincent eventually dated Tori for a while. She later lost her life trying to prove herself to Vincent; she died in his arms apologizing, and blessing Vincent's love for Catherine.
Recurring cast
- Rob Stewart as Thomas Chandler (season 1): Catherine and Heather's father. In season 1, Thomas married Brooke, a woman many years younger than him, causing a rift between him and Catherine. In the first season finale, he was murdered in front of Catherine after being pushed into oncoming traffic by a disguised Muirfield agent, and it was later discovered that he was not Catherine's biological father.
- Rachel Skarsten as Brooke Chandler (season 1): Thomas' widow and Catherine and Heather's step-mother.
- Bridget Regan as Alex Salter (season 1): Former fiancée of Vincent Keller. She grew up in New York City with Vincent and J.T. and while working as a nurse in the same hospital Vincent worked in, eventually ended up falling in love with him. They were revealed to have dated for six years. Despite their engagement, Vincent cut off contact with her when he became a supersoldier in an effort to protect her, but Alex recognized him when he sneaked into the hospital to visit a wounded Catherine. Alex tried to rekindle their relationship, but struggled with Vincent's condition and the realisation that he had feelings for Catherine. With Catherine's help, Alex went into hiding from Muirfield.
- Christian Keyes as Darius Bishop (season 1): Joe Bishop's younger brother. He briefly dated Heather, but was accidentally killed by Vincent; his death caused Joe to launch a manhunt against Vincent.
- Edi Gathegi as Kyle (season 1): The man from Muirfield with whom Evan was secretly working.[7]
- Shantel VanSanten as Tyler (season 1): Gabriel's late girlfriend who also helped him deal with his beastly side. She had a deep hatred of Muirfield due to both Gabe's suffering as well as her own unrevealed past with the organization, and was willing to do anything to undo her boyfriend's condition.
- Ted Whittall as Bob Reynolds (seasons 1-2): An FBI agent running a personal black operation to eliminate Muirfield and the numerous Beasts it produced. At the end of Season 1, he and his team finally kidnap Vincent, wiping his memory and using him as an assassin to hunt down other Beasts. He is also revealed to be Catherine's biological father. While at first the two try to form a relationship, Catherine later shuts him out of her life after she finds out that he was responsible for what happened to Vincent.
- Elisabeth Röhm as Dana Landon (season 2): Another FBI Agent tracking a series of thefts and murders stretching back into the 1800s, all dealing with a specific jewel, one linked to the murder of her husband Sam and to Catherine's ancestry. Unknown to Landon, the jewel is directly tied to the history of Beasts, leading her further into the mystery surrounding Vincent.
- Charlotte Arnold as Marissa (season 3): A distraught midwestern woman whose stockbroker husband begins displaying erratic and violent behavior after moving to New York.

Development
Conception
The CW officially began developing the series in September 2011. The project was described as "a modern-day romantic love story with a procedural twist," unlike the original series which was a romantic drama with mystery and suspense elements. The show is the first project that Mark Pedowitz developed when he joined the network.[11]
Production
"What's beauty and what's beast? There are both of those things in all of us."
The network ordered a pilot of the series in January 2012.[13] The pilot of the show was filmed in Toronto, Canada from March 22 to April 2, 2012.[14] It was picked up by The CW on May 11, 2012, and was scheduled to premiere during the 2012–13 television season.[15] Filming of the first season continued in Toronto from July 27 and production on the thirteenth episode was completed on December 21, 2012.[16] On November 9, 2012, a full season was ordered.[17]
On April 26, 2013, Beauty & the Beast was renewed for a second season.[18] Filming of Beauty & the Beast was moved to New York City, NY from the second season. On May 8, 2014, Beauty & the Beast was renewed for a third season.[19] Filming on season three commenced on August 29, 2014,[20] and ended on February 12, 2015.[21] On February 13, 2015, The CW renewed the series for a fourth season, before the third season began airing.[2] Filming of the fourth season will begin on May 29, 2015, and end on November 17, 2015.[22]

Casting
Casting announcements began in February 2012, when Kristin Kreuk was first cast in the lead role of Catherine Chandler.[23] Austin Basis was then cast in the role of J.T. Forbes, Vincent's best friend.[24] Nina Lisandrello and Nicole Gale Anderson were then added to the cast, with Lisandrello landing the role of Tess Vargas, Catherine's partner and best friend. Anderson signed on to the recurring role of Heather Chandler, Catherine's younger sister.[25] Jay Ryan joined the series in the second lead role, Vincent Keller (the character was originally called Vincent Koslow, though in the original series, Vincent had no last name).[26] Max Brown signed on for the role of Dr. Evan Marks, a medical examiner who has feelings for Catherine.[27] Brian White was the last actor to sign onto the series. White joined in the role of Joe Bishop, Catherine and Tess' commanding officer at the NYPD, who becomes romantically involved with Tess. White's character of Joe Bishop was not included in the second season of the series; the story line was that Bishop lost his job because he focused too much attention on finding the killer of his brother instead of performing his duties.[28]
Reception
The series was given a 33 out of 100 score on Metacritic, indicating "generally unfavorable" reviews from 19 critics.[29] Kyle Anderson of Entertainment Weekly gave the pilot of Beauty & the Beast a C- grade, stating that it lacks the same charm that the 1980s drama had, and that 'The Beast' is more of a Hulk rather than an actual beast.[30] David Wiegand of the San Francisco Chronicle called the series an "overheated, badly written, wretchedly acted and unconvincing drama, which makes mincemeat out of the traditional beauty and the beast fairy tale."[31] Mary McNamara of Los Angeles Times also made similar observations but praised Nina Lisandrello who still remains as the only cast member in the show to ever receive a positive review. About Lisandrello, McNamara wrote "the only point of light is provided by Catherine's partner, Tess, who, as played with great common-sense appeal by Nina Lisandrello, clearly deserves to be on a better show."[32] More mixed but slightly favorable reviews were provided by David Hinckley of the New York Daily News, who said the series was "such a natural it's downright devilish"[33] and Neil Genzlinger of The New York Times, who stated the "girl-power themes will probably play well to the network's core audience."[34]
