The Beaubien surname is a uniquely French-Canadian family name with a rich heritage. All bearers of the Beaubien family name descend from a common ancestor, Jules Trottier. The alias "Beaubien" form was subsequently added to the Trottier family name in the "dit" form: Trottier dit Beaubien (Trottier "called" Beaubien). The surname Trottier dit Beaubien was borne by one of the grandsons of Jules Trottier and eventually shortened to only Beaubien in later generations. Today, all people who bear this name are direct descendants of Michel Trottier dit Beaubien, grandson of Jules....some 850 000 descendants! The change to name Beaubien had to be allowed and signed by the king Louis XIV himself as the name of any nobles could be changed only by permission of the king himself. Michel Trottier was a Seur de Ruisseaux hence the nobility in that family.
