Bear Branch Nature Center is a nature center in Carroll County, Maryland near Westminster. It features walking trails, exhibits about local plants and animals, an aquarium,[1] a planetarium,[2] and three permanent telescopes for stargazing activities.[3] The center is a facility of Carroll County Recreation & Parks.
The nature center is adjacent to the Hashawha Environmental Center, a residential center for environmental education that is also operated by Carroll County Recreation & Parks. The two facilities are also known as Hashawha/Bear Branch.[4]
History
In 1972, the county purchased the land on which the center is built. The name "Hashawha" is a Native American word meaning "old fields."[5]
Hashawha Tower
The Hashawha Tower is a 10m (35 ft) tall windmill donated to the Hashawha Bear Branch Nature Center in Westminster, Maryland, located beside the Algonquin Building.
