Beach Cruiser is the debut studio album by American rapper Glasses Malone. Originally to have been released in 2006,[1] the album was released on August 30, 2011 on Glasses Malone's record label Blu Division Music, Hoo-Bangin' Records, Cash Money Records and Universal Republic Records. The album's release was postponed several times between its initial announcement and its eventual release.[1][2][3] The album is named after the beach cruiser bicycle. In an interview Malone said, "It's called Beach Cruiser, everybody loves a Beach Cruiser. People love those bikes in the 'hood. It's classic, also when y'all gonna hear the music on the record it gonna be dope to a point where you just feel like there is some kind of cruise which you just ridin to the beach, so again I called it Beach Cruiser."[4]

Background

Glasses Malone has confirmed that production will come from DJ Quik, DJ Toomp, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Mannie Fresh, Kanye West, Cool & Dre, Maestro, The Cataracs, Nathan Chapman, Tha Bizness, Curt Beatz and Goldeneye, among others.[4] Glasses Malone has confirmed that he has been in the studio recording and that the album will feature guest appearances from Mack 10, Akon, Kanye West, T-Pain, Game, Tech N9ne, Bun B, The Cataracs, 50 Cent, Eminem, Rick Ross, Tyga, Juvenile, Ghostface Killah, Lupe Fiasco, Lil Wayne, Birdman, Mr. Criminal, Big Steel, Kam, Tyrese, Bishop Lamont, Jay Rock, Brisco, Mykestro, Wyclef Jean, Scarface, Lil Eazy-E, Crooked I and Snoop Dogg.[4]

Of these mentioned, only Toomp, Mannie Fresh, The Cataracs, Tha Bizness and Curt Beatz made the album production-wise, while the features by Kanye West, Game, Tech N9ne, Bun B, 50 Cent, Eminem, Tyga, Juvenile, Ghostface Killah, Lil Eazy-E, Mr. Criminal, Big Steel, Bishop Lamont, Brisco, Mykestro, Scarface and Crooked I did not make the album. Notably, however, FYE bonus track "Fuc Wit Me" features (and is produced by) Mannie Fresh, which makes the FYE Deluxe Edition the first Cash Money Records album to feature work from their former in-house producer since his departure from Cash Money in 2005.

Singles

"Certified", featuring Akon was released as the album's first anticipated official single on November 6, 2007. The single slowly made its way into national radio rotation. The song peaked at 85 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart and peaked at 24 on the Hot Rap Tracks chart.[5][6][7] "Haterz" featuring Lil Wayne and Birdman, was released as the album's second official single on August 19, 2008.[5] "Til da Sun Come Up" featuring T-Pain, Rick Ross and Birdman, was released as the album's third official single on May 12, 2009. The song peaked at 94 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. I Get Doe featuring The Cataracs, was released as the album's fourth official single on June 15, 2010.

Release and reception

Commercial performance

According to HipHopDX, the album sold 3,200 copies the first week. It debuted at 165 on the Billboard 200.[8]

Critical response

HipHopDX gave the album a 3 out of 5 rating calling the album " more of a throwback than a new jack, more of a memory than the future, but he bangs." and concluded with "With unpolished rhymes, a gutter flow and street-centered approach, it’ll be interesting to see what he does when label woes don’t interfere with his path."[9]
