Bayan Lepas is a district in Penang, Malaysia being home to the Penang International Airport. It has a population of about 141,000 people. Bayan Lepas is the main industrial hub of Penang, being home to the Free Industrial Zone, where factories of many multinational companies are located especially semiconductor industry. Penang International Airport also located at Bayan Lepas. Nowadays, the Greater Bayan Lepas has built majority of the condominiums and apartments when travelling on Penang Bridges. Penang's shopping mall, Queensbay Mall, the Bukit Jambul Complex and Giant Hypermarket are located there. Bayan Lepas is connected to Georgetown via the Bayan Lepas Expressway or known as Lim Chong Eu Expressway. There are some tourist spots including the Snake Temple, War Museum, and the Fisheries Department Aquarium. Many new condominiums, housing estates are all currently under construction in this area.

Bayan Lepas features a tropical rainforest climate under the Köppen climate classification. Bayan Lepas has a very lengthy wet season. As is common in several regions with this climate, precipitation is seen even during the short dry season. Temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the course of the year, with average high temperatures around 32 degrees Celsius and average low temperatures around 23 degrees Celsius. Bayan Lepas sees on average roughly 2300 mm of precipitation per year.

High Tech Industrialisation

Bayan Lepas enjoys the foreign direct investment (FDI) from high technology companies. National Semiconductor, now known as Motorola is the pioneer of the MNC that set up the factory in Bayan Lepas .[2] Then, it was followed by the "children of Fairchild" such as Intel, AMD. In 1975, additional 5 MNC such as Osram, Hewlett Packard, now known as Agilent, Bosch, Hitachi and Clarion also followed suits. Together, these companies is locally known as "Samurai Eight"which bring prosperity thru the 70's until now.[3]
