According to its website Bay of Plenty Polytechnic (Māori: Te Kuratini o Poike) offers the largest range of New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) approved programmes in Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic is an accredited provider of national certificate qualifications (Levels 1 to 4) and national diploma qualifications (Levels 5 to 7). It also offers degree programmes and pathways in partnership with other tertiary education providers.
The Polytechnic consists of four schools: Applied Science, Applied Technology, Business Studies and Design & Humanities.
The Bay of Plenty Polytechnic has not participated in the Performance Based Research Fund (PBRF) for research active educational institutions in New Zealand.
History
Bay of Plenty Polytechnic was established in 1982 as the local Community College at Windermere, providing training mainly in trades, horticulture, agriculture and business. Initially, the college tended to reflect the region, with one third of its student hours devoted to horticultural training.
In 1988, its name changed to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic. In 1991 an additional campus was built in the Central Business District of Tauranga. This was named the Bongard Centre, after the inaugural Chairman of the Board Bill Bongard. In 2000, the Library, the Education Development Centre, and several lecture theatres were built at Windermere.
The Polytechnic now has over 12,000 students taking certificate, diploma and degree programmes.[3]

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic offers programmes in Animal Care & Veterinary Nursing, Architecture, Architectural Surveying, Automotive, Beauty & Massage, Building & Construction, Business, Computing / Information Technology, Civil Engineering, Conveyancing, Early Childhood Education, Electrical & Electronics, Engineering & Welding, Fashion, Graphic Design, Hairdressing, Health & Community Services/Nursing, Horticulture, Hospitality, Immigration Advice, Logistics Operations, Marine & Environment, Maritime & Seafood, Music & Performing Arts, Pharmacy, Police Preparation Training, Real Estate, Road Transport & Logistics,[4] Security & Protection Services, Sport & Recreation, and Tourism & Travel.
The institute offers a flagship Marine Studies course. Students have the option of completing the course in two years and receiving a Diploma in Marine Studies, or in three years to obtain a Bachelor of Applied Sciences degree. In addition to the core programme, students receive full SCUBA training up to PADI Divemaster or Open Water Instructor, as well as with certifications including NZ Coastguard Boatmaster, Restricted Radio Telephone Operator's Certificate, NZ Red Cross First Aid Provider and DAN Oxygen Provider.[5]
