The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary is a 700 acre municipal urban wildlife refuge. It is the largest park in the Green Bay, Wisconsin Park system and home to the second largest wildlife rehabilitation program in Wisconsin. Facilities include a nature education center, observation building, hiking trails, woodland building and numerous animal habitats. The sanctuary is adjacent to the Bay Beach Amusement Park.
History
In 1935 and with the guidance of Aldo Leopold, concerned citizens developed the concept of a wildlife refuge with 250 acres of land that the City of Green Bay had previously purchased to turn into a golf course. The next year, the City Parks board approved use a portion of the land to use for injured waterfowl. in 1980 the City purchased an additional 300 acres of land for the sanctuary. In 1985, the Nature Education Center is built, the largest of its kind built entirely by private funds. in 2010, the Resch waterfalls were constructed on the lagoons.[1]
