Baxters is an international food company, based in Fochabers, Moray, Scotland. Baxters is best known for canned soups, made to unique recipes, such as Royal Game. It also makes a range of jams, pickled vegetables and chutneys. The company holds the Royal Warrant for manufacturers of Scottish specialities from Her Majesty the Queen.
History
Baxter's has its roots in a grocer's shop opened by George Baxter in 1868. Baxter's shop became known for supplying pickles and preserves in the early 20th century, when Baxter's son and daughter-in-law began preparing their own beetroot, and selling it to other grocers. Despite the current size of the company, they still maintain an image as a "family business", with a series of advertisements showing the Baxter family heavily involved in the preparation of their products. Gordon Baxter died in 2013 (aged 95), and Ena Baxter in 2015 (aged 90).[1]
In the 21st century they have bought up other food companies, including Garner’s Foods Ltd in 2001[2][3] and CCL Foods plc in 2003.[4]
The company sold off its chilled soups division to Northern Foods in 2008.[5]
In November 2011, the company acquired the Fray Bentos range of pies and meat products from Princes Ltd, and transferred manufacturing of them to their Fochabers plant.[6] Princes had been forced to sell the brand on competition grounds having acquiring it from Premier Foods as part of the purchase of Premier's canned food division.[7]
Business interests
Baxters also own and operate several shop/restaurant facilities across Scotland. These include branches at Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh, Tullibardine in Perthshire, Selkirk in the Scottish Borders and the Highland Village at their headquarters in Fochabers.
Premises
Baxters operate manufacturing sites in Fochabers and Earls Colne in the UK. They also have manufacturing sites in Wolsztyn,[8] Poland and Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, Canada.[4] The original Canadian company was called SoupExperts and specialised in private label manufacturing. The plant now makes a range of Baxter's branded soups for the Canadian market.
They also have Sales & Marketing offices in Glasgow, Scotland and Melbourne, Australia.
Fochabers factory
The company's main manufacturing site is located at Fochabers, Moray, Scotland, where it produces canned soups, jars of beetroot, jams and preserves. It is co-located with the headquarters of the company and its Highland Village Tourist attraction beside the River Spey.[9]
