Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) - A legal entity, the university of Batumi is a prestigious, government accredited state maritime academy. Specializing in higher education, the institution's main function is to prepare qualified staff for employment within the marine-trade fleet and maritime transport infrastructure. Batumi State Maritime Academy provides an educational process that is in accordance with Georgian legislation as well as international conventions “The Standards of Training, Certification & Watch keeping (STCW) “.

History

Maritime education take start seventy years ago and during these time it continue. In last century 20 years there opened evening maritime courses and based on it in 1929 year opened Batumi Maritime technical university. In 5th of march in 1944 year by the committee of self-defence of Soviet union on base Batumi state maritime academy they created Batumi maritime institute. Batumi maritime institute during its subsist played the biggest role in development of maritime sphere not only in Georgia also all over the Soviet union. Institute prepared about 5 thousand high qualified specialists to work in maritime fleet. Nowadays it graduates are still working on ocean ships under the flags of Georgia and many world countries. On this big authorities maritime institute was founded Batumi maritime high institute by decision of Georgian government in 1992, which received status: treasure enterprise – Batumi State Maritime Academy (BSMA) by the government of Georgia in 1944. In 2004 started all educational system reform in whole Georgia. In 25 April in 2005 the status of the academy defined as legal entity and in 9 October by the resolution №184 of Georgian government nowadays status, face and designation of maritime academy defined as Batumi State Maritime Academy – teaching University – Legal Entity of Public Law.

Education

Batumi State Maritime Academy offer students opportunity to receive education in a wide range of Maritime industry. The maritime faculty graduters of academy have opportunity occupy leader position in crews of maritime trade sheep, maritime crewing companies and other public and private services, Whose activities are related to maritime transport services, control and management. Academy promote development of different maritime institution in Black sea region. Close location of academy with Batumi, Poti and Kulevi ports, Supsa terminal create good conditions for students of academy receive comprehensive education practice in these ports, same time academy will provide them with qualified staff. Administration of Batumi State Maritime Academy create conditions for students, which are essential to receive knowledge and develop skills from educational programs. We realize that for students to reach main goal aren’t enough high educational; programs, good educational environment and conditions, also living conditions. The Student self-government help first year students in adaptation with new conditions, other course students and be in close with staff of academy, to take part in social life of academy and sport-entertainment arrangements in the academy. What does Batumi State Maritime Academy represent Batumi State Maritime Academy is specific educational institute, which is due to the fact all the maritime transport and related service activities are regulated not only by national legislation also by the international norms. In a branch of maritime transport regulation organ regulated by international law is International Maritime Organization (IMO) and coordination with international norms arrange Georgian Maritime Transport Department. The basic legislative document of IMO is “The Standards of Training, Certification & Watch keeping” (STCW 78/95). In 1993 Georgia joined this convention and by this it took obligation of sailors prepare process compatibility with international standards.

Academic programs

Education programs are implemented by two certified programs and three Bachelor programs. Main goal of educational programs is to prepare specialist - bachelors of marine science and certified specialists for maritime science sphere. To take high position according level of responsibility of exploitation and management on ocean merchant ships. (According law standards of training, certification and watch keeping for seafarers) To take management positions connecting with function, regulation and control of maritime transport in private or government institutions
