The player is offered a variety of classes and weapons from which to choose. Classes are composed of: British infantry, British officers, Native American tribes, Hessian Jaegers, American minutemen, Continental soldiers and officers, and American frontiersmen.[2] A variety of weapons may be chosen, ranging from muskets and pistols to swords and bayonets.[3]

The game has several game modes of play, including capture the flag, territorial control, and last man standing.[4]

On 7 October, the BG team released the newest version; Battlegrounds 2 v2.1. This version included new and reworked maps, as well as a changed melee system.[5]

On the 11th of November, 2011 the BG team released a minor patch, 2.1.1, which fixed a melee bug for bayonet weapons.
