Barnato Park High School occupies the land once used by Johannesburg Girls' Preparatory School. The co-educational school is in Berea. It was established in the grounds of the mansion that originally had been designed for the mining millionaire Barney Barnato.

History

The large 1897 stone mansion was built for Barnato, but he died young and in unusual circumstances. His home was completed and it was donated by his nephew, Solly Joel, to be used as a school building. The previous mansion was used as a home for boarders from 1912 until it was demolished in 1962. The actual girl's school building was built in 1913 beside Barnato's mansion. The girls' school closed in the 1960s. Three of the four gates from the old property were spared from demolition and are still in existence.[1]

The new school was called Barnato Park High School and it opened in 1970 and unlike its predecessor it is a co-educational school.[1]
