'Barharwa'(Hindi: बरहरवा) is a town in Sahibganj district in the Indian state of Jharkhand.

It is located 52 KM towards South from District headquarters Sahibganj. It is a Block head quarter. It is very near to West Bengal.

Naming

Barharwa is named after a fruit tree 'Barhar' (Artocarpus lakoocha), which is distributed throughout this locality. Not only Barharwa, nearby places here are also named after different fruit trees. Some of them are Katahalbari, Taljhari, Kenduwa, Aatapara, Tildanga etc. This show that this region have plenty of fruits.

Geography

Barharwa is in the boundary of plane of Ganga and Chota Nagpur Plateau. River Ganga is about sixteen kilometer far from Barharwa. Actually, no river pass through Barharwa, but some small natural water streams (locally known as Jhoria) cover this area, which make the land fertile. Barharwa is surrounded by Rajmahal hills all around except towards east. The hills and its slopes are covered with forests, once dense but scanty now. Rajmahal hills was formed at the time of Jurassic Period. Rajmahal hills make Barharwa as a hub of black stone mining. Before the urbanisation and industralisation, Barharwa region was covered by forest. This was the land of Royal Bengal tiger.

Economy

The economy is predominantly agricultural. Barharwa is known for Fruit farming. Varieties of fruits mainly Mango, Sugar-apple(Sharifa), Litchi are grown here. Sabji Mandi Market is a big centre for business of fruits, from where fruits are packed and transported to outside region including Kolkata, Malda, Delhi and Uttarpradesh. Barharwa together with Pakur make hub for black stone mining. It is also known for the manufacturing of crushing and screening equipments.

As of 2011 India census, Barharwa had a population of 12,617.[1] The population growth rate of Barharwa is 1.14%. The town is cosmopolitan, with people from Bihar, Bengal, and Jharkhand; and refugees from Bangladesh.[2]

Government and politics

Vijay Hansda from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won the Indian general election, 2014 from Rajmahal (Lok Sabha constituency) and is the present Member of Parliament. Bharatiya Janata Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) and Indian National Congress are some of the political parties in the city.

Barharwa is connected by Road and Rail link.


Rail

Barharwa Railway Station is a junction which connects two loop lines (one to Kolkata and other to North East Region through Farakka, Maldah to Assam) and lies in Maldah Division. The Railways connection is also with Bhagalpur, Jamalpur, Kiul. Barharwa has good connectivity of trains with various passengers, mail and superfast trains.

Road

The NH-80 passes through Barharwa.

Barharwa has a bus terminus in Main Road. There are regular bus services from the city to other parts in the district. Bus service to Deoghar, Dumka, Ranchi and Jamshedpur is available. Private cars and taxi facilities are available in the city. Other transport is trekkers, autos, rickshaws and mini buses.

Binduvasni Mandir (Temple)

An ancient temple of Tridevi is situated at Binduwasni hill at Barharwa.[3]Binduwasni hill belongs to Rajmahal hills. This place is known as Bindudham. In this occasion of Chetra Navratra nine days Maha Yagya is organised. Fair devotees gather in large number on Ram-Navami at this temple during this festival. Alongwith the Tridevi Temple, a large 35 feet statue of God Hanuman is formed, where people can see the sacred foot prints of God Hanuman. Barharwa Railway station is only two kilometers away from Bindudham. Binduvasni hill belongs to Rajmahal hills.
