Barchester Healthcare Ltd is a United Kingdom-based care provider. It claims to be one of the top four providers in the long-term care sector in the UK and provides in excess of 11,700 beds with a portfolio of over 200 high quality care homes. The largest proportion of the homes are located in London and the South East and the remainder evenly spread throughout the UK.[1]

Barchester Healthcare was founded in 1992 by Mike Parsons who retired as CEO in 2013.[2] He bought Moreton Hill, a 17th-century farm, which he converted into a care home.[3]

Barchester Healthcare was listed in the Sunday Times Top 25 Big Companies to Work for in 2013 – an award voted for by staff.[4] Pre-tax profits declined by 23.5pc to £20.7m in 2013/4.[5]

Its head office is located in Chelsea Harbour, London. It also has offices across the UK, in locations including Berkhamsted, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire and Inverness.[6]

Inspection reports

At White Lodge, in Braydon, registered to provide accommodation for up to 80 older people, the Care Quality Commission reported in November 2014 concerns over users’ care and welfare, respect from staff, safeguards from abuse, medicine management and monitoring of service.[7]

Ottley House a Barchester care home which cares for 72 people in Shrewsbury was found to have locked residents in their rooms and treated them without respect, by Care Quality Commission inspectors in July 2014.[8]

Awards

Sue Arnold, Barchester's Regional Director for care homes in Cheshire, won the ‘Care Operations Manager’ category at the National Care Awards hosted by Caring Times, in December 2014.[9]
