Barabazar (community development block) is an administrative division in Purulia Sadar West subdivision of Purulia district in the Indian state of West Bengal. Barabazar police station serves this block. Headquarters of this block is at Barabhum. Barabazar is an urban area in this block.[1][2]
History
Jaina Bhagavati-Sutra of 5th century AD mentions that Purulia was one of the sixteen mahajanapadas and was a part of the kingdom known as Vajra-bhumi in ancient times. In 1833, Manbhum district was carved out of Jungle Mahals district, with headquarters at Manbazar. In 1838, the headquarters was transferred to Purulia. In 1956, Manbhum district was partitioned between Bihar and West Bengal under the States Reorganization Act and the Bihar and West Bengal (Transfer of Territories) Act 1956.[3]

Barabhum is located at 23°05′30″N 86°12′42″E / 23.0918°N 86.2117°E.
Barabazar community development block has an area of 410.69 km2.[2]
The area forms the lowest step of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. The general scenario is undulating land with scattered hills.[4]
Gram panchayats
Gram panchayats of Barabazar block/panchayat samiti are: Baghbandh, Banjora, Bansbera, Barabazar, Berada, Dhelat-Bamu, Latpada, Sindri, Sukurhutu and Tumrasole.[5]
Demographics
As per 2001 census, Barabazar block had a total population of 146,917, out of which 74,234 were males and 72,683 were females. Barabazar block registered a population growth of 13.60 per cent during the 1991-2001 decade. Decadal growth for Purulia district was 13.96 per cent.[2]Decadal growth in West Bengal was 17.84 per cent.[6]
Scheduled castes at 12,194 formed less than one-tenth the population. Scheduled tribes numbered 31,172, forming around one-fifth the population.[7]
Literacy
As per 2001 census, Barabazar block had a total literacy of 45.77 per cent for the 6+ age group. While male literacy was 65.41 per cent female literacy was 25.14 per cent. Purulia district had a total literacy of 55.57 per cent, male literacy being 73.72 per cent and female literacy being 36.50 per cent.[8]
