History

Bangladesh Textile University is the only university in Bangladesh that specializes in textiles. It meets the need for textile engineering and technology education in Bangladesh and around the world.

During the British colonial rule in 1921 a weaving school was established in Narinda, Dhaka to provide textile technician education by offering artisan-level courses. It was named East Bengal Textile Institute, which was upgraded to offer diploma courses in textile technology and renamed East Pakistan Textile Institute in 1950. In 1960, the institute was transferred to its present campus at Tejgaon Industrial Area. In 1978 the institute launched a four-year bachelor degree in Textile Technology by affiliation with the University of Dhaka and was renamed College of Textile Technology. It was declared as a university in 2010 by passing an act called Bangladesh University of Textiles Act and inaugurated on March 15, 2011.[4]

Textile industry in Bangladesh is the most important industrial sector as more than 78% of the total export earnings comes from this sector. The industry of the country has been rapidly expanding with the ever-increasing demands for textile goods in local and foreign markets. Unfortunately, neither the production level nor the international quality standard of the output has reached the desired scale. The poor added value of locally produced export-oriented RMG items in not only because of non-availability of fabrics of desired quantum but also of quality. The prime factors of quality formation include not only raw material and technology but also the required expertise of the man behind the machines. Therefore, to overcome these drawbacks, equipping the textile industry with required qualified manpower having updated technical knowledge, expertise and skill appears to be essential in building the appropriate backward linkages at the shortest possible time to face the challenges of quota free Post-MFA period.

Considering the importance of Textile education & research, the govt. has taken initiative to upgrade the College of Textile Technology to a University. For this purpose, “Bangladesh Textile University Act,2010 (Act no. 49, 2010) has been passed by the Bangladesh National Assembly and the Honorable President has given consent to the act on 5, October, 2010. A meeting of the internal project evaluation committee of the Ministry of Education chaired by Secretary, Ministry of Education held on 08-09-2010 to consider the DPP of the proposed project submitted by the Directorate of Technical Education.
