BancorpSouth, Inc. is a bank holding company headquartered in Tupelo, Mississippi. As of March 2012, it had nearly $13.3 billion in assets.[3] The company has over 4400 employees.

History

The bank was founded in 1876, when Raymond Trice and Company received a charter to create a bank in Mississippi. In 1886, the banking operation was moved near Tupelo, MS and renamed the Bank of Lee County. Soon after it was renamed again to the Bank of Tupelo. Then, in 1966, it was renamed the Bank of Mississippi. Finally, in 1987, it merged with First Mississippi National Bank and became BancorpSouth, which was the first statewide bank in Mississippi.[4]

Subsidiaries

BancorpSouth operates one wholly owned subsidiary: BancorpSouth Bank. The BancorpSouth Bank Headquarters is at Tupelo, and has $13.2 billion in assets.[3]

Controversies

On May 12, 2010, BancorpSouth Inc had a lawsuit for violating federal securities laws by issuing materially false and misleading statements regarding BancorpSouth's business and financial results.,[5] and paid 29.25 million dollars for settlement.
