Banatski Brestovac (Serbian Cyrillic: Банатски Брестовац) is a village located in the Municipality of Pančevo, in the South Banat District of Serbia. It is situated in the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina. The village has a Serbian ethnic majority and its population numbers 3,517 people (2002 census).
Name
The name of the village refers to the stands of elm trees that surrounded the village. The name of the village is of Serbian origin, and a legend about origin of the name claims that the village was first settled by Serbian settlers from the village of Brestovik located on the southern bank of the Danube.
In Serbian, the village is known as Banatski Brestovac or Банатски Брестовац, in Hungarian as Beresztóc (until 1898 Bresztóvácz) or Temes-Aga, and in German as Banat Brestowatz or Rustendorf.
Geography
The closest major settlements are Pančevo (21 km), and Belgrade (38 km). The village is located at 44° 43' 44.3" N, 20° 48' 49.52" E.
History
In 1717 Banatski Brestovac was mentioned for first time in a Latin document under the name Praestowatz. At that time, the population of the village numbered twelve families. In 1763, 130 German families settled here and 104 Serbian families also lived in village at that time. The Serbs had an Orthodox Church and mill. In 1766 a Catholic church was built (it was demolished by the communists in 1945).
