Baheri is a small city in Bareilly district in the state of Uttar pradesh, India

History

It was a part/village of Kurmanchal kingdom of Kumaon. It was founded during the reign of Nawab of Rampur as it is not very far from the "Capital of Rohailkhand".

Geography

Baheri is located at 28°47′N 79°30′E / 28.78°N 79.5°E.[1] It has an average elevation of 271 metres (889 feet). It is situated at equidistant (nearby 47 km) from Bareilly and Haldwani on Nainital road. The town is very close to the lower range of Himalayas, just 51  km from here near Haldwani. The Nainital Road goes through the middle of town and Nainital is just 90 km away from here. The town is in the northernmost limit of Bareilly district and just 12 km away from UP-Uttarakhand border. There are many Himalayan rivers that flow near to this town,one of them is the Kichcha river which flows in the west of the town and brings lots of sand with it and is also notorious for changing its courses after annual floods.

Climate

Baheri experiences hot summers chilly winter and heavy monsoons. In summers the temperature can go as high as 45 C and in monsoon[June mid to September] around 1100 mm of rainfall takes place. The monsoon makes the region full of lush greenery and the temperature also becomes moderate. In September 2011 it was flooded and fields were submerged. The average temperatures in monsoon season is 31 C. In spring one can see bloom of flowers like dahlia, sunflower, chrysanthemum, lilacs, tulips, roses of various varieties. The temperature here at that time is 24 C, in the month of March.

Society

Baheri has a mixture of all major castes and religions, living together peacefully. In fact town is known for the peace in the societies of all religions. Most of the population here is Muslim with the majority of Banjaras, Pathans , Shaikh Siddiqui, Ansaris. Jats and Sikhs have migrated from Haryana and Punjab respectively during the partition of India in 1947. There are many mosques, gurudwara and temples in town. One of the famous mosque here is Jama Masjid Sadak Vali, located on main Nainital Road. It comes under the constituency of Pilibhit and the current M.P. is Maneka Gandhi.

Demographics

As of 2011 India census,[2] Baheri had a population of 158,577. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Baheri has an average literacy rate of 72%, higher than the national average of 62.5%; with 84% of the males and 62% of females literate. 13% of the population is under 6 years of age.People from various regions and parts are present here like people from West Punjab that migrated Indian regions and also settled in Bareilly district.There are also some Nepali, Kumaoni, Eastern U.P. people and Bengali people here.

There are no skycrapers but many big mansion, banglaow, kothies . There are some malls like INFINITY MALL, CENTER POINT, BAIG COMPLEX and has highly urbanized areas. It is a big city which is highly developed in last ten years at Uttarakhand-Western Uttar Pradesh border. The town has hospitals, clinics, schools and religious centres there are also some markets like Shalimar Market, Meena Market, Center Point, Ameena Bazaar, Gol Market, Hafeez Plaza Market, Haji Naseem mobile Market etc.

Location

The city is located on State Highway 37 that is a sub part of NH 87, which links Pantnagar with Izzatnagar. From Baheri many places in Kumaon and Rohailkhand are linked.

Transport

The city is big and there are many lanes here which are narrow, full of encroachment by the shopkeepers, street vendors etc. and usually congested so rickshaw is the only means of transport. Autos also run here. Usually Uttarakhand Roadways and UPSRTC buses connecting Nainital/Kathgodham/Haldwani to Bareilly and other parts of U.P./Uttarakhand ply through Baheri. Private buses for Delhi are also available. Earlier, the town used to be a traffic congestion nightmare on Bareilly - Pantnagar - Haldwani - Nainital route. But the construction of Baheri bypass road has eased the traffic flow. In Baheri, Tata Ace and Vikram autos also run mostly on bio-diesels and help people to commute to nearby places. Tonga (horse driven) are also still in use for both passenger as well as freight transportation purpose mostly to nearby places/ rural areas.

Railways

Baheri has a big and long plateforms railway station on Lalkuan-Izzatnagar BG route. All trains on this route stop here. Earlier the route was under MG connecting Kathgodam to Bareilly. Later in the late nineties, Kathgodam was connected to Rampur under BG via Lalkuan, Haldi Road, Rudrapur city and Bilaspur. Now, the task of conversion of the Lalkuan - Izzatnagar Meter Gauge section to Broad Gauge railway line has been completed and the railway transport has resumed initially with few passenger trains providing increased mobility to the passengers. Soon plans are on to provide with direct trains on this route connecting it to the major cities of northern India. Broad gauge railway transportation started from 8 January 2013.

Currently Here are 4 pairs of Passenger trains running from Lalkuan Junction to Bareilly City. The BG work of 4 km between Bareilly city and Bareilly jn. is now completed, and train is running on this route from 7th Feb 2015.

Airport

There is domestic air services present at Pantnagar Airport (40 km) with limited flights to Delhi and Lucknow. Also in extreme cases Air Force base at Bareilly give permission for air services.

Pedology

Soil present is exclusively mixture of Terai and Alluvial and is moderate brown in colour. The Terai is composed of seasonally marshy zone of clay and sandy soils. The Terai has higher rainfall than plains, and the downward rushing rivers of the Himalaya, slow down in flatter Terai zone, depositing fertile silt in the monsoon season and receding in the dry season. The Terai has a high water table due to groundwater percolating down from the adjacent zone.

Baheri is a part of Teria region of the Himalayas where one can find heavy forested regions. Terai part has lots of grasslands and a variety of wildlife do live in them. There is lot of greenery nearby here and lots of green farms can be seen here. There rivers and field make a perfect picture of the landscape.
