Kwon Bae-young (Korean: 권배용, born March 17, 1981), usually anglicised to Bae Young Kwon, is a mixed martial artist from Buan in South Korea. He is currently rated as one of the best featherweight prospects in the country and fights for ROAD FC and ONE FC.[1]
MMA career
Kwon made his MMA debut at Shooto in Japan, defeating Keiji Sakuta by unanimous decision. His second fight was for M-1 and he defeated Tae Hwan Bae by TKO in the opening round. In total he fought three times for Shooto, winning two out of three fights.
In 2011 he signed for ROAD FC in Korea and defeated Kyung Ho Kang by triangle armbar in his first fight for the Korean promotion and the previously unbeaten Brian Choi by unanimous decision in his second fight.[2]
Kwon was originally scheduled to face URCC Featherweight Champion Eric Kelly at ONE Fighting Championship: Battle of Heroes at the BritAma Arena in Jakarta, Indonesia on February 11, 2012.[3] but Kelly was forced to pull out of the fight due to personal reasons and was replaced by URCC Lightweight Champion Honorio Banario.[4]
The fight went the distance and was very close with Kwon losing the decision, possibly because he was issued a yellow card for an illegal elbow. After Eric Kelly pulled out of his title match with Honorio Banario at ONE Fighting Championship: Rise of Kings Kwon was reportedly called up to replace him and to rematch Banario for the ONE FC 145 lbs belt.
