BBC Motion Gallery is the footage licensing division of BBC Worldwide, offering media professionals in advertising, commercials, television, film, interactive and corporate video production access to over a million hours of motion imagery for licensing worldwide.

History

The organization originated in London as BBC Library Sales, a division of BBC Worldwide, in 1961. It opened an office in New York in 1993, and in 1994 opened offices in Toronto and Los Angeles. BBC Motion Gallery has since opened additional offices in Hong Kong, Sydney, Mumbai, Tokyo and Paris.

Functions

BBC Motion Gallery footage encompasses subjects including natural history, sport, news, locations, art, music, celebrities and historic events. Clips from the archive have appeared in several films, usually of a historical nature.

Users are able to access tens of thousands of BBC Motion Gallery clips online, or enlist a team of professional researchers to tap into the repository of content stored offline.

In addition to the BBC archive of rights-managed footage, BBC Motion Gallery offers a wide range of high-quality, royalty-free motion clips and economical CD collections.

Website

Users can search, share and order footage from amongst tens of thousands of clips on BBC Motion Gallery's website. The website includes numerous showreels featuring highlights from BBC Motion Gallery's many represented collections.

Representations

BBC Motion Gallery is the exclusive global representative of the CBS News Archive, and has global distribution arrangements with NHK (Japan’s national broadcaster), CCTV (China Central Television, China's largest national TV network) and ABC (the Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

BBC Motion Gallery started a strategic relationship with Getty Images on January 1st 2014.

In addition, BBC Motion Gallery represents numerous other archives, including Rip Curl, Aero GP, the England and Wales Cricket Board, ESPN Classic (UK), Urban Freestyler and Nugus Martin. Additional collections are being added regularly.

BBC Motion Gallery operates from offices in London and regional offices in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Toronto, Sydney, Paris and Tokyo.

Short programmes

In addition to footage licensing, BBC Motion Gallery produces and distributes short-form programmes for broadcast on television and across all new media platforms. There are approximately 70 short programmes titles including "Animal Capers", "Days that Shook the World", "World's Wonders", and "Weird Science".

The BBC Archive is a searchable, online database which catalogues over a million hours of BBC content dating back 60-years. BBC Archive includes detailed text descriptions of news items, television programmes and rare clips.

Users can access BBC Archive via bbcmotiongallery.com. All content is stored as text entries.
