Bárbaro Rafael Cañizares [cah-nyee-that'-ress] (born November 21, 1979 in Havana, Cuba) is a Cuban first baseman that plays for the Guerreros de Oaxaca in the Mexican League. He is 6'3" and weighs 230 lbs. He bats and throws right-handed.
Career in Cuba
He played for Industriales of the Cuban National Series for eight seasons, having played 520 games hitting 537 hits in 1775 at bats. He had 38 home runs and 294 runs batted in with an average of .303. He guided his team together with MLB player Kendrys Morales to the postseason in 2005.
Career in Minor Leagues
Cañizares sold his jersey to a fan after a game. Unbeknownst to Cañizares, the fan was a member of the United States Interests Section in Havana. As a result, Cañizares received a lifetime suspension from Cuban baseball.[1]
Cañizares defected from Cuba in February 2004, with Michel Abreu and Yosandy Ibañez. The three played baseball together in Nicaragua.[1] He signed with the Atlanta Braves on February 4, 2006.
Major Leagues
Cañizares was called up to the Atlanta Braves on June 11, 2009, making his major league debut the same day batting fourth and playing first base.[2]
Mexican League
After the 2010 season, he was released by the Braves and was signed by the Guerreros de Oaxaca prior the 2011 season. In his first season, he was the batting champion after batting .396.
Independent League
After finishing the 2012 season with the Guerreros de Oaxaca, Cañizares was signed by the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the American Association on Aug. 21, 2012.[3]
