Ayroor (sometimes Spelt as Ayiroor (Malayalam:അയിരൂര് )) is a village situated on the western part of Ranni Taluk of Pathanamthitta District in Kerala state, India. Formerly, Ayroor was part of Tiruvalla Taluk in Alleppey District and is considered as part of Edanadu in Kerala. The Pamba River flows by the southern side of this scenic village and makes soil around the village very fertile. Ayroor village used to be a part of the erstwhile Travancore kingdom. It is believed that the Thekencore kingdom's Kovilans ruled Ayroor in the past. The Kovilans brought a Christian family from the north as they believed that the kingdom will become prosperous with the presence of Christians. The descendants of this family is still present in Ayroor and is known as the Ayyakkavil family. It is also the Kathakali village of Kerala.
The Pamba river and the surrounding hills make Ayroor one of the most picturesque places in central Travancore. Residents of Ayroor cultivate Coconut, Rubber, Cocoa, Tapioca, Plantain, Cinnamon, Pepper, Nutmeg, Vanilla, Rambutan and other crops. So the per capita income of the residents is considerably above the state average.
One of the highlights of Ayroor is the Cherukolpuzha Hindu Parishad which is held on the dry bed of the Pamba river. The convention is held for a week in February every year. Snakeboat races also attract people to the village. Ayroor boasts numerous Churches and Temples. Hindus and Christians are currently almost equal in numbers and social status. The harmony with which these two prominent communities live in Ayroor is worth mentioning such that there has not been a single incident of any religious riots in its history.
The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport (117 km)and Trivandrum airport. The proposed rural Aranmula International Airport would be the closest airport upon completion, at 8 km away. An airport in central Travancore is an aspiration of millions of central Travancorians working all over the world who support the Government exchequer with much needed foreign currency. In central Travancore most of household depending on remittance of their sons and daughters from foreign destinations. Today they had to depend distant Nedumbassery or Triavandrum airports. Vested interested urban lobbies are delaying the airport with help of environmentalist and religious fundamentalists.
Religion
Various sections of Christianity and Hinduism co-exist harmoniously. A very interesting fact is that there are no Muslims and Mosques in Ayroor.
