Ayn al-Arab District
`Ayn al-`Arab District (Arabic: عين العرب and Kurdish: Kobanê / ALA-LC: ‘Ayn al-‘Arab) is a district (mantiqah) administratively belonging to Aleppo Governorate, Syria. It fills the northeastern section of the governorate, and its northern boundary is along the Syria–Turkey border. At the 2004 Census it had a population of 192,513. Its administrative centre is the city of Ayn al-Arab (Kobanî).
In January 2014, the territory was declared as the de facto autonomous Kobanî Canton of Syrian Kurdistan.
Sub-districts
The district of Ayn Al-Arab is divided into four sub-districts or Nāḥiyas (population according to 2004 official census):
- Ayn al-Arab Nahiyah (ناحية عين العرب): population 81,424.[1]
- Shuyukh Tahtani Nahiyah (ناحية شيوخ تحتاني): population 43,861.[2]
- Sarrin Nahiyah (ناحية صرّين): population 69,931.[3]
- Al-Jalabiyah Nahiyah (ناحية الجلبية) - was part of Sarrin sub-district until 2009
