Aviation Bowl
The Aviation Bowl was a post-season college football bowl game played at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, Ohio, on December 9, 1961.[1] The University of New Mexico and Western Michigan University met in front of just over 3,500 fans. It should also be noted that it was unusually cold and miserable in Dayton on that particular December day. Although the NCAA approved a second edition for 1962, the bowl was never played again. It was a financial failure.
New Mexico did not win another bowl game until the 2007 New Mexico Bowl. The entire 1961 Lobo team was inducted into the University of New Mexico's Hall of Honor in 1990 as a result of this bowl win.
