Avalanche Studios is an independent and privately held video game developer based in both Stockholm, Sweden and New York, USA. It was founded in March 2003 by Christofer Sundberg, Linus and Viktor Blomberg. Avalanche Studios focuses on developing original intellectual properties for games and other media and base their projects on the Avalanche Engine.
History
On 24 March 2010, Avalanche announced that they formed a new development studio called Expansive Worlds which will be the casual and online games division with a strong focus on community-driven subscription-based titles.[1]
Avalanche Studios announced Renegade Ops, a downloadable military co-op shooter on March 30, 2011. Renegade Ops was released on Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network and Microsoft Windows.[2]
On June 15, 2011, Avalanche Studios announced plans to expand into North America by opening a new studio in New York City. The studio will develop an as-yet unannounced title for next-generation platforms.
As of May 28, 2012, Avalanche Studios is working on three unnamed projects. One, internally called "Project Mamba", is a "groundbreaking" open-world action game being co-developed with Square Enix, which was revealed to be Just Cause 3, and the other two are based on movie and comic book franchises.[3]
It was later revealed in 2013 that one of these titles is the upcoming 2015 video game adaptation of Mad Max. In March of 2015, Avalanche announced a release date for Mad Max, as well as the roster of release platforms, cancelling the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 ports and adding Linux (SteamOS, specifically).[4]
On August 2014, Avalanche has 250 employees, around 160 working in Stockholm and 90 in New York.[5]
