Australia is scheduled to compete at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from 5 August to 21 August 2016. The first places the team qualified were for four athletes in the team dressage.

Team leaders

Kitty Chiller, who competed as a modern pentathlete at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, was selected as the team's Chef de Mission, the first female to hold the role for Australia.[1]

In April 2014 team leaders were selected for ten sports. They were; Michael Scott for swimming, Simon Nathan for athletics, Chris O'Brien for rowing, Richard Fox for canoeing and kayaking, Tim Mahon for shooting, Chris Webb for equestrian, Adam Sachs for gymnastics, Graeme Rose for diving, Bernard Savage for triathlon and Peter Conde for sailing.[2][3] In August 2014 a further six team leaders were named; former winner of The Open Championship, Ian Baker-Finch for golf; Luca Liussi and Scott Bowen, as heads of the men's and women's rugby sevens squads; former world cup bronze medalist Trish Heberle for the men's and women's field hockey teams; Jonathan Grady and Tamara Sheppard for the men's and women's basketball squads.[4]

Funding

In May 2014 Australian Sports Minister Peter Dutton announced that 650 Australian athletes identified as medal prospects would receive funding directly from a newly designed program that reallocated A$1.6 million from the Direct Athlete Support program.[5][6]

In June 2014 the Australian Institute of Sport revealed its allocation of A$120 million worth of funding for 2014-15. Sports to receive increased funding included canoeing, rowing, sailing, swimming and taekwondo.[7]

Cycling

Australian cyclists qualify for the following events.[8]

Mountain biking

Equestrian

Australia is expected to be confirmed as having qualified a complete team in dressage by finishing in tenth position in the team event at the 2014 FEI World Equestrian Games, held in Normandy, France. The team will qualify as the top ranked nation from South East Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Middle East.[9] The Australian eventing team also qualified for Rio by finishing fifth at the same World Games.[10]

Sailing

Australia has qualified one boat for each of the following events upon receiving a place from the 2014 ISAF Sailing World Championships.[11]

Shooting

Australian shooters have achieved the following quotas based on their performance at the 2014 ISSF World Shooting Championships.[12]

Swimming

Australian swimmers have so far achieved qualifying standards in the following events (up to a maximum of 2 swimmers in each event at the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT), and potentially 1 at the Olympic Selection Time (OST)):[13][14] Swimmers must qualify at the 2016 Australian Swimming Championships (for pool events).
