Aufheben is the twelfth studio album by The Brian Jonestown Massacre. It was released in May 2012 on band leader Anton Newcombe's A Records label. The album was available for free streaming prior to its release,[6] and was recorded in Berlin at Anton Newcombe's studio and the East German Radio Station "Studio East". The title of the album comes from a German word. It has several meanings, such as "to lift up", "to abolish" or "to preserve". In philosophy, it is used by Hegel to explain what happens when a thesis and antithesis interact.[7] The cover art was taken from the Pioneer plaque. It is their first album to feature founding guitarist Matt Hollywood since his departure from the band in 1999.The Artwork for the album cover is the same image engraved onto a gold strengthened aluminium plaque. The plaque is fixed to the outside of Pioneer 10. A NASA probe.
