The Auckland Pirates were a New Zealand professional basketball team that represented the Auckland region in the New Zealand National Basketball League. They played their home games at the ASB Stadium in Kohimarama, Auckland, New Zealand.
Auckland won more New Zealand NBL championships than any other team. A key reason for their outstanding success in the mid to late 90s was the coaching of former Tall Blacks coach Tab Baldwin and the outstanding play of Pero Cameron and Kenny Stone.
Formerly known as the Auckland Stars, the team won back to back New Zealand NBL championships in 2004 and 2005 thanks to players like American Casey Frank and Tall Blacks Dillon Boucher, Aaron Olson, Lindsay Tait and Mike Homik.
The Stars were kicked out of the 2010 season after being suspended by the league from February 2010 because of financial problems, with many players, and coach Kenny Stone owing wages and salary. All players were released.[1]
In 2011, the team came under new ownership and was renamed the Auckland Pirates. In 2012, the James Blond Pirates won their first ever franchise title, knocking off the two time previous champs the Wellington Saints 89-83.
The team will again miss out on another season. The Pirates will not be participating in the 2013 NBL season due to, again, financial problems.[2]
