Athletics at the 2015 European Games are scheduled to take place at the Baku National Stadium and on the streets of Baku. The National Stadium will be the setting for the 20 men's and women's track and field events that will also be the European Athletics Team Championships Third League. The 600 athletes will compete over two days for points in each event, which will then be combined for a final team score.
Athletics at the European Games offers possible qualification standards for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.
Athletics was not included in the earliest list of sports confirmed for the 2015 Games, as the European Athletics authorities at that stage were minded not to take part. However, following negotiations with the organising authorities, a compromise was reached in February 2014 between the organisers and European Athletics. Two sets of competition will be held as part of the European Games; one in the main stadium as part of the European Team Championship and one non-medal event as demonstration events on the streets of in the fashion of the Great City Games street athletics format. The agreement was confirmed by Pat Hickey, president of the European Olympic Committees in February 2015.[1]
The 3rd League (the league in which Azerbaijan competes; the lowest league) would take as part of the 2015 European Games. It feature sixteen eligible teams plus Azerbaijan, for a total of 850 athletes. As part of the European Team Championship format, both genders would compete in the non-Olympic 3000m event, while Olympic events longer than 5000m, and combined events, would not be held. The league itself, as a whole, will be considered a single team event for medal purposes.[2]
