Athletic Genova is a basketball club from Genoa.

History

The club was founded in 1968 in the street of Via San Pio X, where it was also the head office, at the hands of Gino Negro, Elio Fertonani and Don Gianni Tacchino. In 1970 the club was permitted to professionally participate in competitions by acquiring the rights of the then Basketball D. Genoa, which at the time was involved in Serie C.

The 1974-75 season was the first held in a professional league, following the reform of the championships. The salvation came as well as at the end of the second year, but only at the end of the second leg play-off against Juventus Caserta. Since 1976, the formation of Genoa assumes sponsorship with Emerson and enters the orbit of Pallacanestro Varese, Lombardia get from doing the veteran Dodo Rusconi and young Maurizio Gualco, Enzo Carraria and Mauro Salvaneschi: the foreign player was instead represented by Brazilian Marcos Leite "Marquinho." They guaranteed the club its first historic promotion to the top flight. The impact with the A1 however, was not as welcomed, and Emerson retreated with assets of 6 wins and 16 defeats. That season, which also saw their debut in FIBA Korać Cup (1977-78), was the last season of the Athletic Genoa. They since then ended their season and the team moved to Novara (coming Manner license plate) for a more appropriate facility, where they were previously denied from the Municipality guarantees of use of the Fair.

Despite their displacement in Novara and undergoing further regulation, the team professionally competed in basketball in their first year.

After that experience, the club continued its activities at the regional level, reaching its best result: a fourth place in Serie C region in the second half of the 1990s. The youth section, always flourishing, has produced a lot of players who are currently playing with the best teams and Ligurian militating or have played in national categories, such as Fabrizio Greko, Stefano Arrighi, Andrea Fertonani, Niccolò Cerboncini, Francesco Rovati, Marcello Mangione Philip Cainero, Daniele Manuelli. Currently the team has entered the orbit of the Riviera Vado Basketball and through a collaboration with the Basketball Pool 2000, Loano is playing a league summit in the Under 17 Open Ligure. The seat has remained the historical Via San Pio X with an adjoining small gym in the homonymous church, while the playing field has become the PalaCus Viale Gambaro.
