Athani is a town in Belagavi district of Karnataka, India. It is 140 km from Belagavi city and 75 km from Vijayapura 75 km from Miraj, 100 km Kolhapur, and 590 km from Bengaluru. The main profession here is agriculture, particularly sugarcane,Jawar. The river Krishna flows around the southern part of Athani Taluk,It is largest sugar production taluk in karnataka&It is oldest municipal Town of karnataka it was established in 1853 according to the municipal act 1850 .

Transportation

Athani is connected to various places like Shedbal, Bijapur, Miraj, Sangli, Chikkodi, Ugar, and Jamkhandi and the town has NWKRTC bus service. The nearest railway station is Ugar railway station which is 35 km from the city &Miraj 75 km from Athani. Bealgavi Airport is the nearest airport.

There is proposal for a new railway line between BijapurShedbal- Athani to connect Vijayapura with Belagavi. Survey of this 112.3-km new railway line is completed and submitted to South Western Railway Hubballi.

As of 2011 India census,[1] Athani had a population of 62,886 acc to the area 13.64sqkm. Males constitute 61% of the population and females 59%.Athani has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average with 69% of the males and 79% of females literate.14% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Athani has typical North Karnataka culture. Janapada (folk) songs and dances are found in villages surrounding Athani. The God of town is the Siddeswara. He makes many pavadas to bles people. And in this city an ancient temple Amruthalingeshwar temple is their Kokatnoor Yallama, Katageri Lakkavva, Avarkhod Hanumappa are other holy places that draw devotees from as far afield as Maharashtra. Agali husbandry Fair it is biggest husbundry fair in India and many fairs were takes place villages surrounding Athani Athani has produced many well known Kannada poets and writers. Its contribution to Kannada literature is considerable. Kannada is the main language, Marathi is also spoken here.

Athani Taluk

Athani taluk is largest taluk in a Belagavi district it has a total area of 1997.7 km2,[2] 74% is cultivated. This includes 89 inhabited villages and hamlets with rural population of 761,400 souls as per 2011 census. The total population of taluk 2,30,00 The taluk is bounded by Sangli district of Maharashtra in north & Vijapur district in east,Bagalkot district in south east . Geologically the area is covered by Deccan Trap formation. The average annual rainfall is 582 mm. The two rivers that flow here are, Krishna and Agrani. Agrani is beside the pandegao, shirur, ajur, sambargi, nagnur(p.a.), tawanshi, and kalloti.

The 5 large towns of Athani Taluk (sorted in order of decreasing population) are Athani, Ugar, Ainapur,Kagwad,Shedbal. The river Krishna flows around the Athani taluk. Five sugar industries are in this taluk. They are located in Athani, Kagwad, Kokatnur, Ugar and Kempwad. There are 4 hobalis in this taluk; they are Athani,Kagwad, Telsang and Antapur.

In Athani agriculture is the main occupation. The main crops are: jawar, wheat, sunflower, toordal, and kushbi. The commercial crops are grapes, cotton and the main commercial crop is sugarcane. Athani is one of largest sugarcane cultivation taluks in Karnataka. Irrigation facilities of Hipparagibarrage of Upper krishna Project roject]] is in athani taluk. It is very helpful for cultivation of sugarcane and grapes. The most part of taluk is fertile land. By Hipparagi project canals were constructed in Athani. They are useful to farmers.


Industries

In Athani the leather Chappals are famous.The sub-groups are Dhors and Samagars who are mostly engaged in this leather trade and are traditional leather workers. Dhors are specialized in tanning of hides and skins, while Samagars have proved as intricate craftsmen to produce leather footwear. Recognizing this, the Khadi and village industries commission established a footwear manufacturing centre under the name “Charmalaya”. The success of this paved the way towards another milestone, where ‘Lidkar’ backed by the State Government, saw the light of the day, boosting the activity of footwear manufacturing further. The footwear is marketed throughout India by the respective outlets. The traders from other part of the country also procure leather goods from Athani, to market them in their areas. Through the State Trading Corporation, these leather goods are also exported to many countries where they have found a sizeable market. The category which has established itself by way of its design and quality is known as ‘Kolhapuri Chappals’ which has a great demand in local as well as the export markets. These Foot were exported to foreign Countries like Scotland, Netherlands, England etc.

In Athani taluk the first sugar industry was started by Ugar sugars in uagar and next by Krishna co-operative sugars in Athani and Renuka sugars pvt limited in Kokatnur the Ugar sugars produces a largest sugar in Karnataka about more than 12000 tones.
