Astor Mansions is an Art Deco building in the City of Johannesburg. It was designed by Obel and Obel in 1931. The building was residential with street level retail and first floor professional office space. The building had a short lived stint as the tallest building in Johannesburg until the completion of the Ansteys Building in 1935.[1] Astor Mansions displays clear references to the Chrysler Building in New York, particularly the iconic curved zigzag. The name was inspired by the Waldorf Astoria New York, named for the "Astors", a wealthy American family who made their fortune through real estate, which was completed in the same year.[2]
