Astarsa
Astilleros Argentinos Río de La Plata S.A. (ASTARSA, which can be roughly translated as Argentine Shipyards of the River Plate) was an Argentinian shipyard. Its core business was built and repair of ships and locomotives. It also manufactured pipes, industrial machinery, and tractors. It went out of business in the 1990s.
History
In the 1920s the Sociedad Colectiva Hansen y Pucchini, predecessor of ASTARSA, was founded. The first ship over 1000 tons launched in Argentina was built by ASTARSA for Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF).[1]
The shipyard was located in the city of Tigre, north of Greater Buenos Aires, on the Luján River. It had a peak of 1500 naval and metallurgic workers.
ASTARSA acted as sub-contractor for General Motors Inter-America Corp. Astarsa's main line of business was shipbuilding. Shortly before its involvement with GM, the company also acted as subcontractor for Werkspoor and Alsthom (1966–1971), in addition to doing major repairs to diesel and steam locomotives for the Ferrocarriles Argentinos. In 1994 the company ceased operations, abandoning locomotives (new and under repair) within its shop. By 1997, the company declared bankruptcy and the shop was in the process of being sold by 2000.
