Assumption Catholic Secondary School is a Catholic high school in Burlington, Ontario.

School population

The school population for the 2007-2008 school year was 1,119. In the summer of 2006, portables were added in order to deal with increasing enrollment. All of these portables have since been removed as the school's population has dropped in recent years. This drop is due to the redirection of graduating students of Ascension Elementary School from Assumption to Corpus Cristi Catholic Secondary School which opened in September 2008. Since this time the Halton Catholic District School Board is considering moving graduating students from Ascension back to Assumption to fill now empty classrooms at the school.[1] Assumption receives most new students from local separate elementary schools, including St. Raphael, St. Paul, St. Patrick, St. John, and Holy Rosary.

Assumption, like all publicly funded Catholic schools in Ontario, also accepts non-Catholics. They are expected to take part in the religious activities and mandatory religious classes.

The Catholic school's parishes are Holy Rosary, St. Raphael's, St. John's, St. Paul's, and St. Patrick's which are a part of the Diocese of Hamilton, under Bishop David Douglas Crosby.

Athletics

Assumption offers a wide variety of sports teams. Over the years, Assumption's boys football teams have been competitive both in the local Halton league, and beyond into the Golden Horseshoe Bowl playoffs. In 2004 and 2005, they were the Golden Horseshoe Champs and inaugural Provincial Bowl finalists, led by quarterback Danny Brannagan.

In 1990, the Senior Boys Rugby team became the closest team in 19 years to ending the winning streak of Oakville Trafalger. Although the team lost 7-6, a poor call at the end of regulation prevented the Crusaders from advancing to the OFSAA championships. The official later commented that this was one of the best rugby games he had ever witnessed.

In the late 2000s, the boys basketball team also came into its own with the 2008–09 season bringing the team into the Toronto Star Top 10 rankings.

The Assumption girls soccer team has also been successful medalling at OFSSA in 2008.

In 2009, the Assumption ski team level two girls won GHAC and moved on to OFSAA, and in 2010 a member of the level two boys team progressed to OFSAA. In both 2009 and 2010, the level one girls won GHAC and made it to OFSAA.

In 2010 the Senior School Reach Team had an undefeated regular season going 15-0 and qualified for the Provincial Championships. Also, the team qualified for the American Nationals in Chicago after qualifying at a tournament in Guelph after playing against some of the top teams in Ontario. The team came second at the Ontario Provincials and qualified for the Nationals, becoming the first team from Halton to do so. Also, the team captain was named one of the four National Finals MVP's.[2]

The school's senior mock trial team also excelled in 2010, reaching the final round of the Brantford Ontario Bar Association tournament and winning the Halton District Catholic School Board tournament at Corpus Christi Catholic Secondary School.

The school offers academic programs for university-bound students, applied programs for college-bound students, and essential programs for the learning challenged; it also offers co-op apprenticeship and workplace programs in computer engineering and cosmetology. The school community prides itself on athletic achievements, and Assumption teams, known as the "Crusaders," are in a wide variety of sports (see below). Arts-related groups include a yearly school play and entries in the Sears Drama Festival.
