The Association of International Research and Development Centers for Agriculture (AIRCA) was established in Punta del Este, Uruguay, on 30 October 2012 during the second Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development.[1]
The founding members are nine international agricultural research and development centers. One of the objectives of AIRCA is to combine resources in order to contribute to healthy, sustainable and climate-smart landscapes and promote the achievement of "Goal 1: the eradication of extreme hunger and poverty" of the Millennium Development Goals.[2][3]
AIRCA has been criticized as a duplication of effort as its role and mission overlaps with that of CGIAR,[4] Proponents point out that CGIAR focusses more on research while AIRCA's emphasis is development communication and implementation of the results of research.[1]
In October 2013, AIRCA published a white paper titled "Transforming Rural Livelihoods and Landscapes" which explains how the nine centers' combined capacities can help to bring about changes on a landscape level to the long term benefit of smallholder farmers.[5]
