Ashlyns School is a school for pupils aged 11–18 in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England. As of September 2013, Ashlyns School returned to the two-tier system (as a Secondary School)
History
Ashlyns School was built on the Ashlyns Estate in the 1930s by the Thomas Coram Foundation for Children, (the Foundling Hospital), a Charitable organisation set up in the 18th Century, as replacement for their premises in London. It passed to the local authority in 1951: for a time some children under the care of the foundation still lived in the school: once they moved out their dormitories on the first floor became class rooms. It has the "girls staircase" from the London Foundling Hospital.[1]
Recent
In recent years, the school was awarded specialist school status as a Language College.[2] On the 19th of December 2008 Headteacher Mr Dalziel resigned after 10 years in charge; he was replaced by Mr Gary Lewis from January to April 2009 and then he was replaced by Mr James Shapland, formerly Deputy Headteacher of Nicholas Breakspear School in St Albans.[3] The school has been used for the setting of the film Son of Rambow which was primarily shot in the surrounding area of Berkhamsted and Ashridge Estate.
